If they want Gonzalez, what's the wait here especially with the Braves job opening up fairly soon after Cox is finished?

Because anyone hired now gets saddled with this terrible team, even just for a month. They can easily have an agreement in principle that will become official once the season is over.

Man, I hope this happens.

I don't see the point in being excited about Fredi, his presence would be meaningless and Hendry would still be GM.

He did a pretty admirable job shining up [expletive] in Florida. I don't see why someone wouldn't be excited

Because Jim Hendry is the Cubs GM, and Florida has outperformed the Cubs during Hendry's era. They've had young relatively inexpensive players, not excrement.

lol, Hendry is still GM guys, let's shut it down with the whole finding something to be happy about

Seriously, it's the manager. It's the least important move they will make this winter. I just don't see the point in getting worked up one way or the other while the guy who keeps putting together disappointing rosters is still in charge in putting together the roster.

Seems to me that the Cubs' manager has been driving the bus on acquisitions for some time.

The manager has contributed to the dialogue but this has very clearly been Jim Hendry's team for the bulk of the decade.

They put in their requests, but it's Jim Hendry's team.

But if there's a pattern of Hendry always following those requests then getting a new manager could impact personnel decisions as well. Hendry cannot pawn blame off on the manager because ultimately it's his decision. But if Fredi comes in and requests more valuable things, would Hendry probably not honor those requests as well?

I don't know of a single player that's on this team because of Lou. Baker fell in love with some non-walking scrubs, but Hendry was all about that type of player until he kept getting hounded about the lack of walks and OBP. Baker killed some arms and preached a lack of patience that Hendry had been pushing since he was working in the minors.

I don't see a huge impact by managerial desires and I see very little chance for a smart manager to get Hendry to make smart moves.

Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts will be involved in the managerial search, but at this point he's leaving the process in general manager Jim Hendry's hands.

"It's Jim's responsibility to go out and find a new manager," Ricketts said in an interview with beat writers Wednesday after ceremonies for the move of the Harry Caray statue. "What he'll do is he'll create a short list and I'll meet with everyone on the short list.

Lou was just as much involved in the "get more lefthanded" push as Hendry was, if not more. That led to DeRosa being traded (good move) and Aaron Miles being signed (very, very bad move), among other moves. It was also Lou's dislike of Eyre that got him moved and probably the same way with Wuertz.

Ever since he took over as GM, Hendry has been extremely manager-friendly and seeks out the types of players his managers want. The manager doesn't pick the specific players I'm sure, but the manager does have very significant input on the types of players he wants Hendry to target.

Taking one of the best hitters in all of baseball this year and hitting him 8th fairly consistently probably hurt the team. I can't imagine Fredi letting that continue.

No love for BB?

Not really. Fredi and Girardi are a couple of steps above BB and Sandberg. As someone mentioned before I would have no problem with Sandberg as a Bench coach to Fredi.

You mean like when they went out and got Jim Edmonds?

And the evidence that Fredi only wants the right players is where? He coached on an Atlanta team with legendary player development success and then managed a Florida team that was very young. The managers input is miniscule in comparison to Hendry's actual track record.

Therefore, nobody should care about who the manager is? (Almost) everyone knows Hendry is a problem. That's no reason to throw up your hands about the manager. He'll obviously have some input on player acquisitions. Maybe we don't know where Fredi is on this, but I'm not seeing any other appealing options.

Yeah, with Hendry as GM still there's no reason to care about who the manager is. It really doesn't matter. The only appealing option is getting a new GM.

I agree it's clearly time for him to go, but I'd like the best managerial candidate brought in regardless.

The Edmonds move was necessitated because Lou wasn't comfortable playing Pie. It worked out without a doubt, but it is another example of Hendry doing as the manager wishes.

I don't know what kind of players Fredi would want Hendry to go after and I'm not necessarily advocating Fredi specifically in this debate. What I am doing is pointing out that who the manager is does make a difference with Hendry as GM because Hendry has a track record of listening to what his manager wants and going out to get those types of players.
