I watched up until the Bears TD drive. Beekman and Louis were pretty horrible at C and RG respectively. Beekman in particular was beat on every single play that I saw. I thought Omiyale looked pretty solid. Williams looked good. Those 2 along with Garza were solid in pass protection. All 3 stayed on their blocks in the run game, but got 0 push.

Beekman was terrible all night, imo.

I love how this team is so awesome at sucking on defense in any 2nd and long/3rd and long situation.

I love how the SD defender was so close to transitioning from a face mask to a horse collar.

I don't think you love either of these things.

I actually lack the capacity to love. :(

One thing that feels old and tired is the injuries in the defensive secondary.

Major Wright apparently has a hurt finger now, to go with his groin issue from a couple weeks ago. Hillenmeyer's hurt now, and Manning couldn't go Saturday night.

Long is the list of good talent who washed out of the league because they couldn't stay healthy. Don't know what needs to be done to keep these guys on the field, but once the season starts, I'm not relishing another year of a MASH unit in that secondary.

You forgot about Steltz, who sounded like the most seriously injured on the night from what I'd read. I think Wright should be ok though...even if he has a broken finger, he won't miss a huge amount of time.

Forgot about Steltz, you're right.

Wright has looked good to my eyes. It would be a shame if a promising young player like that just couldn't stay healthy. And we really need someone to come in and become that guy for us, too. Since Mike Brown's prime we've just needed that position to become OK for us again, and it hasn't happened.

Steltz has been insignificant with this team in the 2 years he's been here. As far as I'm concerned, he falls behind Chris Harris, Al Afalava, Major Wright, Josh Bullocks and Danieal Manning on the depth chart anyway.

Based on your injury report, I'd say they got off pretty easy for week 1. The biggest concern, however, needs to be how they plan to protect the qb.

The Bears had Steltz starting on Saturday, and even if Major Wright had won the job, he would've been getting some playing time. Supposedly Steltz has had a great camp.

Yeah but I just can't see it. If Steltz was going to be a quality NFL safety, the strong likelihood is that we would have seen him stand out more by now.

The problem is that Steltz has played better football than all of the safeties you have him behind. Harris was traded away because he was lackluster before, and isn't great still. Afalava is probably going to be cut and was a failure last year (granted he was a 6th rounder thrown into the fire). Wright, has 1 exhibition game under his belt. Bullocks was a YouTube laughing stop. Manning is fast and stays on the field because he's Lovie's buddy.

Steltz is probably the slowest and least talented of the group, but he also probably has the best instincts and is the least out of position. He'll still probably be the 4th safety option at best, but he deserves to be on the team over Afalava and Bullocks at the very least.

What do you mean about Harris?

I think just about everyone was surprised when he was traded before, and he went to have some pretty good seasons with Carolina.

Surely he's a more talented player than Steltz is right now.

Same could be said for everyone on the roster, except Wright. Not saying that he's great or anything, but Steltz at least will be in the right position. Not sure about his tackling or ball skills, but which safeties have those on this roster? If you are going to be lacking there anyway, you might as well do so with someone in the right position.

How do you know he's going to be in the right position? I don't think we've seen enough of the guy in real game situations, under big time pressure, to know that.

He's played in 23 games in 2 years, started the last 2 last year. We've also seen him in preseason games. We have also seen several of his games at LSU and scouting reports to support that.

He's started 2 games, when teams could/would be planning for what he does.

In my mind Harris is the better player. We'll see if I'm proven wrong.

I didn't say Harris wasn't better. But I think Steltz is a better option at FS than Harris is (Harris is better SS by a lot).

How did Afalava's stock drop so much? I mean, I know he wasn't great last year, but he was a 6th rounder starting in his rookie season...there's surely room for him to develop his game.

He might not get the chance to show himself now, from the depth chart up, which is where he probably should have been in order to develop.

Chalk him up as a casualty of our borked Safety situation, I guess.

I think it's more of a numbers game. He's a SS, and it just so happens that FS is the biggest need. He's strictly a SS, but he's clearly behind Harris, Manning (since this is his position of the week nowadays), and Steltz right now. He was horrible when forced to play FS last year and he's also behind those 3 and Wright there, maybe Bullocks too.

His job may be saved if they keep 5 safeties, and he can contribute on special teams and he has the upside still to justify it I guess.

Major Wright has a broken finger that needs surgery. Will miss Saturday's game but isn't ruled out for the season opener.

That has to impact his chances at being a starter though, you'd think.

Any word on Steltz?
