New Gm, New Manager

What is the general consensus for the desired manager or potentially even GM?

Possible manager names: Bobby V. :good: , Joe Torre, Sandberg, Fredi Gonzalez, Trammel, Brenly... any others?

Possible GM's: Kevin Towers, Steve Stone (only joking), who else would be a solid option?

I would love to have Bobby V, possibly giving Trammel a shot as well. For GM I am not too familiar with who is out there but always liked Kevin Towers, or is there a young GM out there in the mold of Epstein?

After reading Hendry's quotes in the paper the last couple of days, I have the feeling that he will be around next year. :( As far as managers go, I don't think it will really matter. Would love to see Torre come though.

i think fredi gonzalez would be a good choice for manager.

as for GM, i'd throw a bunch of money at someone who has already done well in the position (towers isn't a bad choice). if that doesn't work, get someone who values the farm system and non-traditional way of thinking about the game (jack z. from seattle is a good example of this)... someone who will find diamonds in the rough (franklin gutierrez, russell branyan) rather than signing guys like grabow and henry blanco because they're established veterans who know how to play the game.

Yeah, I'd still like to see him, or Bobby Valentine, though Bobby V. does run contrary with the general sentiment I've come to have towards "established managers." Maybe it's Lou and Dusty running things back to back, but someone like Gonzalez appeals to me because I think there's less of an egotistical, "don't you know who I am?," dig-in-your-heels-regardless-of-how-stupid-a-decision-is-type manager there. That's why I really would not want to see guys like Sandberg or Brenly handed the reigns any time soon.

fredi gonzalez went after his superstar in the dugout. he should have known who hanley ramirez was.

i don't want a guy who feels compelled to make examples out of people who are far more important and talented than him.

So, you don't like Bobby Cox b/c he pulled A Jones mid-inning?

While I'd prefer Gonzalez, I'm MUCH more concerned with who replaces Hendry. Give a guy a good enough lineup and they almost have to try to screw it up, regardless of the manager.

Sandberg with great GM>>>>>Gonzalez with a bad GM.

Given Ricketts' statements at the beginning of the year to the effect that he thought the pieces were in place to be competitive this year, I'd be shocked if, after seeing the results, he kept Hendry on. This seems like a "evaluate what we've got" sort of year, while next year looks to be the start of the "molding the team into what I'd like it to become" process.

And like others said, I'd be willing to put a nice sum on Gonzalez being the manager in ATL next year.

I disagree with your opinion whether Hendry will be retained. Hendry knows the personnel in the system and obviously will start the dismantling of the current team. Also, I'm not sure Ricketts wants to wait a few more years with 2011 "to be the start of the "molding the team into what I'd like it to become" process." If Hendry can unload Fukudome and possibly Zambrano (eating money) along with losing DLee and Lilly, he will have money to work with to build a competitive team with a few free agents and an infusion of youth.

Hendry with a short, tight leash being held by Ricketts would be okay.

I don't understand why you'd want to retain a GM but tie his hands because you don't trust him. If that's the case, just get rid of him and get someone you trust.

My thought was that any big money/long term contracts would have to be okayed by Ricketts. I would think Ricketts would want the same situation with a new GM too.

cubsfan5150 = Jim Hendry!!

Jimbo, calm down big fella! We know your end is near, but that is no reason to become so bitter buddy. Also, it may be a good idea to put down the sauce for a little while. Us folks who don't know anything about baseball would greatly appreciate it if you didn't drunkenly mess up the Cubs franchise anymore than you already have at present.
