What players deserve All-Star consideration at this point?

I know we are still a few weeks away, but the voting is going on and has me wondering. Who on this team deserves to make the AS team?

As crazy as it sounds, I think Silva has earned a spot unless he completely falls apart between now and then. I think Marmol should go. What about Fonzi or Byrd?

The only 2 people that will be in the discussion will be Silva and Marmol. I guess Soriano would have a slight shot, but I haven't looked to see how deep the OF candidates are this year.`

If the decision was today, I'm gonna guess only Silva goes. If Silva falls apart at some point in the near future, Marmol is a great backup pick. Despite Marmol's awesome K numbers, the Cubs crappy season combined with no players getting much hype means that they will only get 1 All Star for the 2nd year in a row.

I think Soriano should get some consideration. He's the 5th outfielder in the NL in OPS at .924 out of OFs with a minimum 100 PAs. His 1.8 WAR is also tied for 7th in the NL among OFs.

Interestingly, Byrd has a 2.4 WAR – tops among NL OFs with at least 100 PAs.

I'd say Byrd would be considered if he were to be 1st in the rankings of a highly regarded advanced baseball statistic. One that could measure the total value of said player by projecting how many wins this player gives a team rather than putting a replacement level player in there instead. This statistic should put him 1st at least amongst his NL OF peers that have over, lets say 100 ABs.

If you can find me evidence of such statistic, I will then consider including him into this discussion.

Without the recent rule changes, Silva would probably be considered but left off the team. This has been a pretty banner year for NL pitching so far. There are 13 slots on the roster. Jiminez, Halladay, and Wainwright are locks. Carpenter and Santana between reputation and having very good years are probably in. Bell, Broxton, and probably Marmol have good shots from the closer role.

That leaves 6 spots left. Garcia, Pelfrey, Cain are likely the first 3 up. One of the Houston pitchers probably makes it as their only representative. And that leaves Silva fighting with about 8-10 other pitchers for 2 spots.

But with Sunday starters not getting to pitch in the All-Star game, Silva has a much better chance of making it when they get replaced. The other way he has a chance of making it is if he stays undefeated between now and then and adds a couple of wins.

I think Silva and Marmol are both in (unless Silva starts the Sunday before the break). Marshall and Byrd may get some consideration, but unless the Cubs kick into higher gear between now and selection time I'm not sure they'll get consideration for more than two spots.

I realize the danger in projecting that far in advance..... but right now I have Silva pitching on Friday before the All-Star game......

Well, he's sitting #1 for LF in OPS and the only one close is Willingham, that's among qualified hitters.

He's #2 overall among OF, behind Rasmus. Again, that's qualified.

That's in the NL, I didn't look up how he sat overall in the MLB.

I realize OPS isn't everything, but looking only at this years stats, I'd say he's performed pretty well, especially considering he started a little slow and picked it up after a couple of weeks. Plus, he's actually been fairly healthy. I don't know if all of that means he deserves an ASG nod, but it wouldn't be an embarrasment if he got one.

I just noticed, the Cubs have 3 of the top 12 in OPS for outfielders in the NL. That's all outfielders. Considering how crappy the team has been, that's kind of surprising.

Edit: Add non-qualifiers, it's 4 of the top 18. Colvin is at #6.

The Cubs have been so bad this year that I can't believe they would get much consideration. With Marmol and Silva as the most obvious choices and Byrd as an outside choice, I would think Soriano and Marshall have no chance. That being said, Soriano does have the name recognition if by some miracle he was voted in as a starter.

I don't know why you're low balling Soriano's chances with the voters. You're talking like like he wasn't voted an AS 7 of the last 8 years and isn't having a good season and doesn't have a ton of name recognition.

Tim Lincecum and Josh Johnson will likely go before Silva, too. Other possibles based on performance or reputation/fan base: Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez, Mike Leake, Stephen Strasburg (he will get votes, regardless of performance), Clayton Kershaw, Tim Hudson, etc.

I think with Silva being a notoriously terrible pitcher he might get overlooked for some bigger names. If he keeps this level of performance up he definitely deserves the nod, but if he's not picked it wouldn't surprise me one bit.

I think pitchers are selected by the managers and not by a vote. I doubt that Strasburg will get in and name recognition will be less important. I think managers seem to favor veterans that have paid their dues and that could help out Silva. I think that Silva will get in as a replacement for someone that pitched the Sunday before.

If I'm not mistaken managers will select alternates, if a voted in pitcher is unable to pitch. Otherwise, they are all voted in by the fans.
