No Peter, Tyler Colvin was known and wouldn't have lasted to the next pick.

WTF was my first reaction but I guess Wilken gets a little benefit of the doubt.

Yeah. That's how I feel - I didn't like Colvin or Jackson and a lot of guys didn't like Cashner and all 3 of those first rounders have had success to this point.

I did want Sale or Castellanos.

What's he gonna say though. "Man this is typical Cubs, they really crapped the bed on this pick?"

It might be ok, I just hope this was a Wilken pick and not someone else.

This has been Wilken's MO his entire career to draft some strange picks in the first round. They've usually ended up working out though in both Toronto and they're starting to in Chicago. So I'm not worried that this pitcher doesn't have 1st round talent although I wish they had gambled and tried to get him in the 2nd.

I'm only really irritated that it was pretty much a stone cold lock that Simpson is available in the 2nd.

Simpson being drafted has crashed the Southern Arkansas athletic website, and Baseball Cube doesn't have him. Frustrating.

Yeah, but those guys had pretty consistent 1st round grades. When everyone in the business is in agreement on a guy, they're right 9 times out of 10.

I thought Colvin had a lower round grade. He was ranked 170th by BA at the time.

PNR Scouting has Simpson ranked #289 in their Top 300.

My recollection is that Colvin(and Doolittle as well) had a lot of helium up to draft day and it wouldn't have been a surprise at all to see him taken in the Sandwich round.

Now that I've worn off from the shock, it's nice to get a lefty starter in the system. Let's hope Wilken isn't trying to outsmart everyone and really sees something in Simpson.

Looking at google images, it appears Simpson is a right-handed pitcher. I think the MLB tv guys were wrong when they called him a lefty...

Did he play any wooden bat leagues or any higher level things at all? Those numbers are good, but that competition isn't.
