the point isn't that other teams break minor league starting pitchers into the bullpen before moving them to back to the big league rotation down the road, it's that those guys were full time starters throughout their developmental years. they had lots of innings to develop. cashner threw 100 innings last year and 74 innings in 2008 (54 of those from the TCU bullpen). it's just silly to compare a pitcher with so few innings to guys like lester, price, etc.

Perhaps you should consider the possibility that the "all other practices" you mention are precisely the ones that forward-thinking organizations like the Rays and Red Sox (you know, the clubs folks are clamoring for the Cubs to emulate) are rejecting as flawed and outdated.

Who are all these top prospect SP that the Rays and Red Sox moved to the pen without having innings as a starter? Price and.....

Dude quit while you're behind already. You sound like Dusty with this "that's how they've always done it" logic.

Why don't you address the previous post he made?

What post was that?

He asked for guys that were starters in the minors, broke into the bigleagues as relievers, and then ultimately settled in as starters. Such a list has already been provided.

Are you serious dude? No, I didn't, and you know it. I already addressed why those guys aren't valid examples, and you choose to ignore it.

The larger point I was making is that normally dextermorgan and many others here are clamoring for the Cubs to eschew conventional wisdom and be more progressive in their thinking (embrace OBP, ignore pitchers' ERA and W-L, and so on). Two examples commonly cited are the Rays and Red Sox. Those clubs have broken the mold, so to speak, and have been very successful.

I aslready responded to this too, and I'm still waiting for examples of top prospect SP that the Red Sox and Rays put in the major league rotation without properly stretching them out in the minors.

Everyone can see that you intentionally skip posts that prove you wrong and keep making the same posts even though they've already been addressed.

guess the worst part about this move isnt that their doing it, its that they dont need to do it. Now that Lou seems to realize that Grabow has no bueiness in key situations, the pens been OK. If we really needed a set up man, then this move would be OK, However, hes probably more valuable building strenght in the Iowa rotation, and can be brought up if Silva falls off a cliff and Gorzalanny has already been traded, or has fallen off a cliff himself. They're making a bad decison here, especially when there are guys like Blake Parker, who should be next in line.

Andrew Cashner-S-Cubs May. 29 - 1:19 pm et

Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein reports that the Cubs may recall RHP Andrew Cashner from Triple-A on Monday.

Cashner had recently moved to the bullpen for Triple-A Iowa, so it's a good bet that the Cubs will keep him there when they do call him up. Randy Wells' horrid start yesterday really taxed the Cubs' bullpen, so this move could be a temporary one, or perhaps the front office has decided that their first-round pick from 2008 has nothing left to prove at Triple-A.

It doesn't seem like it really taxed the bullpen much other than Russell who seems like he only pitches once a week anyway.

While Russell has had 4 gaps of 6 days in his log, he's still made 17 appearances in 54 days, or nearly once every 3 days.

Yeah, combine that with 7 innings from Silva yesterday and I don't think the bullpen has been taxed much at all.

With all the talk about trades, Im surprised there hasnt been any talk of trying Wells in the pen. He was in there for a small sample size, I believe in the end of 2008 and did pretty well. As for Gorz, we already have 2 quality lefites in the pen in Marshall and Russell, and Gaub looks like he could step in if Russell falls off a cliff. If we could get something of use in return for Gorz, I would be all for it, but I just dont see it at this time. If we tried Wells out of the pen, that would add another righty with a rotation of Z, Demp, Lilly, Silva, and Gorzo, with Cashner, Jax, and Diamond all seemingly ready in Iowa if the need arrises. Then we have the new and improved pen of Marmol, Marshall, Wells, Russell, Stevens, Howry, and unfortunately, Grabow. Cashner goes back to the Iowa rotation, and maybe put Atkins in the pen just in case Howry falls apart, which wouldnt shock me. Its much better than the disaster waiting to happen of Marmol, Grabow, Samardjiza/Gray, Marshall, Caridad, Berg, and Russell. The pen really isnt a problem at this point, as long as Grabows kept out of high leverage situations. As far as pitching goes, we have the good problem of the rotation logjam.

#Cubs will call up Andrew Cashner on Mon in Pitt

Cubs are dumb.

Now he's not coming up on Monday.

#Cubs will have Randy Wells start Mon vs #Pirates, followed by Ted Lilly & Carlos Zambrano. Cashner is coming up but won't join team Monday

The Astros are notorious for bringing up guys in the bullpen first. Roy Oswalt and Wade Miller did. There is nothing wrong with lettong him get his feet wet in relief. It won't stunt his growth any. Now if they do it the entire season that is another issue altogether. Letting him pitch in the pen for a couple months and then moving into the rotation or back to Iowa to work on things is probably a good thing.

cashner needs innings as a starter. it's not about him being a reliever for a while. it's about him needing innings as a starter.

Roy Oswalt and Wade Miller's career high in innings in the minors wasn't 100. That's the problem.

Walt Jocketty not nearly as dumb as Jim Hendry:

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty isn’t ready to turn to left-lander Aroldis Chapman to be part of the bullpen solution. Jocketty seemed at least open to looking at Edinson Volquez in that role when Volquez returns from rehab for “Tommy John” surgery.

Cashner has the stuff to do the job. One scout at the game Friday compared him with Nationals much-hyped rookie Stephen Strasburg, who is to make his major league debut Tuesday.

"If Strasburg is better than this guy, then he has to be awfully good," he said.

Thank goodness he's in our bullpen!

I don't have a problem with Cashner getting his feet wait on the majors as a reliever. Is it ideal? No, as I prefer him getting him innings as a starter in the minors. But what will pissed me off is if (or possibly when) the Cubs bounce him from bullpen to starter back to the bullpen, ala Sean Marshall and Shark.

How about when they make him a starter next year, let his innings increase by 100 innings, and then he blows out his elbow?
