Any of you that are criticizing Santo for not knowing what inning it was or where they were or whatever should listen to 1 inning of other teams announcers. Last night I watched the game from the DC feed and had to listen to Rob Dibble. Santo often has no idea what's going on but I'd prefer that to an idiot who thinks he knows something and insists on repeatedly saying stupid things.

Ron is basically just there as a fan in the booth at this point. You obviously aren't looking to him for some sort of in-depth analysis or insightful color commentary. Pat is great and he and Ron have fun together and that's fine with me. I hope he's able to be in the booth if/when the Cubs ever win a championship.

That's how I feel about it. He's just there cheering on the Cubs, rather than providing much insight.

I don't really care if he's "good" or not.

Does anyone have a picture of Santo and his white upper lip from last night's game? :)

what the heck was that?

Supposedly he cut himself shaving. I found a pic on page 10 of the game thread, if anyone is interested. The pic is blocked for me at work, but I was able to see it on my phone.

Um no I mean his inability to be a good color commentator.

He's not markedly worse this season than in any past seasons.

Agreed. He's REALLY bad this season. Before it was just kind of goofy but now at times like it honestly seems like senility is creeping in. It's sad, really.

I'm wondering if it isn't health related.

I just remember thinking the same thing about Harry after his stroke. He wasn't the near same announcer he was from his Cards through early Cubs years.

That's what I'm thinking. People are getting defensive in this thread like Ron is being attacked for being Ron, but it's really just a couple of us pointing out that he sounds unusually confused and out of it, even for him. It's less an effort to "attack" him and more pointing out with concern that this is a guy who realistically should not be long for this job. He's not "just a fan" in the booth at this point.

During Sunday's blowout win, Pat and Ron had a little down time, so Pat was teasing Ron about getting manicures.

Ron replied, "I don't get manicures. I'm a Cubs fan. I don't have any fingernails to do. I've bitten them all off."

That's what I love about the guy. Not the most insightful, nor eloquent. But he's a fan. He's one of us. And Pat does a great job helping Ron out and setting him up for something of note to say. They make a great team. And as a previous poster noted, there are color commentators who try too hard and end up sounding stupid.

I think they should just add a third to the group. That way, when Ron can gracefully transition into that "Fan in the Booth" character he is and when he can no longer perform, there will be an easier transition back to a two man team. Moreland would be fine with me. Prefer not Otto but you probably need a pitcher to counter Ron's "insight" on hitting.

Rob "Wrigley Stadium" Dibble is HORRIBLE, I used to listen to him on XM and he is convinced that the only things he doesn't know are known only to that other bonehead Kevin Kennedy.

I think Ron is noticebly worse this year but I hope he can stay in the booth for as long as he wants and I hope he is there the day (if and when) they ever win it.

Given, I've only heard Ron maybe 15-20 times when I've been at a friend's house, but he's absolutely hysterical. I hated him at first, but the more I listened, the more I liked him.

I absolutely love it when Pat tells some long story that lasts for a few minutes and has in-depth analysis, which is shortly followed by a 2-3 second pause in the booth and then Ron saying "yeah..."

Simply hysterical.

what a stupid idea, its his job until he cant do it anymore. If you dont like it, turn the TV on...

kind of hard if you're in a car

Agree... put a third guy in there with them.

Not a fan of Ron. Don't wish ill will on him but I can't stomach listening to him or his moans when something bad happens.

I listened to the game last night b/c Dibble was the alternative.

Ron is fine. I don't detect any differences except his voice sounds weaker. I think his health isn't good.

well look at it this way, for as bad as many think Ron is, he is still nowhere near as bad as Ed Farmer and Darrin Jackson. Jackson has been using Pat Hughes' "its gotta chance" occasionally as well
