The Pirates are 7-5 and have a run differential of -22. Iwamura leads the regulars with a .785 OPS, and their starters who aren't named Zach Duke have cumulative ERA of 9.00. That is incredible.

So they've scored the same number of runs the Cubs have, have given up basically one more run per game, and have a .583 winning percentage instead of our .385.

Haven't the Cubs had the lead in every game this year except for last night?

That's not too surprising. If our bullpen wasn't so damn awful we'd probably be pretty good this year.

Didn't lead on Saturday either.

you do realize that the Cubs are next to last in the NL in runs scored? Yet we would be pretty good if our bullpen wasnt so damn awful?

The bullpen is one place Neil Huntington spent a lot of effort overhauling this year. And, with the exception of Hayden Penn (Since DFA'd), it has been good enough.

It took even a bigger hit last night. I'm going to have to look at the numbers on games Charlie Morton doesn't pitch. Last night was 6 runs, taken out without recording an out in the 2nd.

Duke winning 4-3 and Morton losing 8-1 counts as a 1-1 record, with a -6 run differential.

When we lose, we really do it. When we win, we eke it out.

No, this is not sustainable. But, I'll enjoy it while I can. Been too little to enjoy the past couple of years.

The offense is something I figure will come around. We've had leads, we've just been unable to hold them. I realize you can't win every day by scoring 2 or 3 runs, but I still see the bullpen as the bigger problem than the offense.

Indications are this might not be a temporary move. Lou Piniella told reporters "this makes all of the sense in the world." The Cubs are trying to solidify the backend of the pen as well as straighten out Carlos Zambrano according to one report.

Thread Over.

Sorry to hijack some Pirates love

the margin for error is much less with a poor offense. If the Cubs had a good offense the bullpen would look much better

Most of my optimism for the season evaporated over the past three days. As bad as yesterday was, one needs to look at that whole series, and it gets worse (yes, it can actually do that.)

Fortunately, we fly into Houston today. (I probably just jinxed them, didn't I.)

We thought Houston coming to town was a good thing also. Oops.

Yep, looks like you did.

Poor Pirates. I would love to see them good again, and thats amazing because I pretty much never hope inter division teams do well. Be good but not at the expense of the Cubs.
