Cards trade Lugo to Orioles

Recommended Posts

So how does that work. When it's time for payroll, does Boston send Lugo's paycheck to St. Louis, who in turn deposits it, then when they do payroll, do they cut a new check to Baltimore, and then Baltimore cuts that same check from their payroll, and by the time Lugo gets his check for week 1, the season is half over. :blackeye:

It absolutely shouldn't matter, from a fan's perspective, of course. But now I can't help wonder about it, as well. Strange. :)

Lugo was just about a free player and the Cardinals traded him. That says it all.

He was really only useful as a hitter against LHP. He still has good speed, but is just brutal defensively. The knee surgery really hampered his lateral movement.

I read one article that had Lugo backing up Cesar Izturis.

Julio Lugo is backing up Cesar Izturis. Think about that for a second.

Think about it this way. Two Cardinals SS are the SS for the Orioles. Either the Cardinals are good at renting SS or they are good at dumping SS. A Cardinal backing up a Cardinal.

I always assumed that Lugo gets paid by Boston for whatever amount they are picking up, and the new team pays anything they owe to the player separately? This would be easier, provided that direct deposit was properly set up for everyone. Since taxes can be quite complex due to the differing portions of time worked in various states each with their own tax rates and laws, I assume that payroll is somewhat modernized, but who knows? I now can't help wondering about this as well...

I think Boston pays the $9 million and Baltimore pays him the league minimum?

From a USA Today article:

According to th Baltimore Sun, the Commissioner's approval is necessary because Lugo has $8.6 million left on his contract being paid by the Red Sox. The Sun reports Lugo will make the league minimum from the Orioles. His Orioles salary will be $400,000, according to the Associated Press.

That's what I thought. If Lugo wasn't traded by the Cardinals, the Cardinals would be paying him the league minimum. Is it like the NFL when a Draft pick is from a team and through another? Like, $8.6 million are paid from the Red Sox through the Cardinals?
