The upshot is that, barring a trade for a reliever, the bullpen looks like this: Carlos Marmol, John Grabow, Marshall, Samardzija, Justin Berg, Esmailin Caridad and lefty James Russell. If that holds, the Cubs will open with three lefties in the pen: Marshall, Grabow and Russell, who was a dark horse coming into camp.

James Russell is going to throw like 1 inning a week.

What's the status of the arms acquired for DeRosa? Any of them near staying?

Gaub was in the last series of cuts. He'd probably be one of the first potential call ups if he gets off to a good start in Iowa. Stevens was sent down in the group before that but will likely be back for at least part of the year. Archer is still a couple of years away.

I've found my new favorite prospect.

Silva and Gorzelanny filling out our rotation..I just threw up in my mouth a little

This. If this team somehow manages to stay in contention until August, at least there will be an obvious spot for them to improve.

It really depends on the health of the other pitchers. If the other 4 are healthy, the Cubs are very likely to find a dependable starter out of the quartet of Gorzelanny/Silva/Marshall/Samardzija. Two of those are very good bets to be dependable IMO (Gorzelanny and Marshall) one is somewhat reasonable (Silva) and one is a longshot but still has the capability (Samardzija). If they are needed for 2 spots for most of the season it becomes a little more difficult, but for 1? Sure, an upgrade could always be a possibility but I really doubt it will be a major hole at the end of July.

I am really not too worried about the pitching staff as long as Lou does not stick with people too long in their roles like he did with Gregg. If the Cubs can get 2 and half somewhat decent months out of Gorz and Silva then we get close to trade deadline. The Cubs will have prospects and people to move if a decent name hits the market, Rickets already said if they are in the hunt they will have money to work with at the deadline. Who knows by late june or early July you may see some pitchers like Webb, Harang, Arroyo, Meche, Sheets...etc... available.

If the cubs can have a strong April I will not be worried.

Am I the only one who doesn't find that completely awful? Especially when Lilly is back we'll just have to deal with one of them making the regular 5th start. CCPacer put it really well that all we will really need is a serviceable 5th guy and we can pick from a group of guys that have been successful in the past or have potential to be good (Shark).

Assuming the rest of them are healthy and pitching well.

Right, but that's the same about any team in MLB. On paper, our projected 5 for the year could be much worse imo.

Sure, but the point is to be one of the best, not just better than the worst. The offense has weaknesses, the pitching staff has weaknesses. In past successful years they've had the best pitching, or the best hitting to carry them. I'm not just hoping for a 85 win season, I'd hope they win 90+, and to do that they need really good, not just good enough.

I, for one, believe the Cubs should have the best hitting and pitching in baseball. That would be their best chance at winning games.

Why does Lou seem to hate Marshall so much? He always seems to get shoved into some weird roll in the bull pen. Like when Lou decided that he was a LOOGY. Or now, when he might be the best starting option and won't be.

With Wuertz and Gaudin gone, Lou had to find a new pitcher to hate.
