No reason they can't do better, but I don't see a compelling reason why they would be better either. It's just something that is up in the air pending decisions that the club makes over the next several years.

If the Cubs have the highest payroll in the division for the entire decade, I'd bet a lot of money on them having a better record than the 00s

Would you take 1 World Series in the decade and trade that for more years of suckage?

I would.

That's a hindsight question. We're talking about looking forward. There's no strategy you can go develop that involves winning 1 WS and sucking for a lot of years.

No compelling reason? Because for the first decade in history (or at least post-FA history) the Cubs enter the decade poised to be amongst the top 4 in payroll all decade. Teams that were up there all last decade include the Yankees who made 9 playoff appearances, went to 3 World Series and won 2 of them, and the Red Sox who made 7 playoff appearances, went to 2 World Series and won both. So yeah there is a compelling reason why they should be more successful than the previous decade.

well, '97 Marlins come to mind

That was the strategy, same with the DBacks. If it was possible to guarantee one WS in a miserable decade, I'd take it. But your best bet is still to make the playoffs as often as possible, so I'd rather try and have the best team possible every year than hope your 1 glory season plan works. That is the plan that worked for the Angels, White Sox, Cardinals, and Phillies this decade. And that is really how the Yankees and Red Sox won this decade, even if they aren't a fair comparable to anybody else.

The eras of 1900-1910 and 1930-1940 make 2000-2010 pale in comparison.

This article is terrible and fraught with contradictions. I'll let Dolan fill you in on the rest.

I stopped getting mileage out of the 1900-1910 and 1930s eras in like 2002.
