TUCSON, Ariz. -- Cubs manager Lou Piniella has picked his leadoff man, naming Ryan Theriot over Kosuke Fukudome on Monday, and said the shortstop's former LSU teammate, Mike Fontenot, has the edge at second base.

If Piniella sticks to his plan, the Cubs' lineup on Opening Day against the Atlanta Braves would be Theriot, Fukudome, then Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Marlon Byrd, Soriano, whoever wins the second-base job and Geovany Soto.

Looking at that line up makes me think of.......

Jim Hendry, trying to break up the heart of the Cubs line up with lefty bats since 2003.

Back then it was Sosa, Ramirez, Alou, Karros, etc..

Soto 8th? I was hoping he would move to sixth. I want Sori and Soto 6th and 7th. Don't really care about the order of those two but those two should bat in those spots.

I'm not really worried about those guys because we know Lou will change them around based on how they hit.

I could see Theriot hitting leadoff all year, and that sucks.

If Soriano and Soto bounce back I assume they'll move up in the lineup since keeping them behind Byrd at that point would be beyond moronic.

Fukudome should be leading off.

If Theriot and Fukudome were hitting in the top 2 spots in the lineup, you might as well hit Theriot first to avoid all of the double plays he'd ground into with Fukudome on base.

Possibly, but I'm not looking forward to the hit & runs Lou will be tempted to call with Theriot on base and Fukudome at the plate.

I would guess that Lou's more likely to bunt or hit and run with Theriot at the plate and Fukudome on first than the opposite. Plus this will likely cause Lou to try straight steals less with Fukudome who would be much less likely to be efficient with them than Theriot.

this doesn't really mean much as Lou changes his lineup about as often as he changes his underwear. it is probably an indicator that Theriot will be near the top of the lineup most of the season, which probably isn't good (but also something we pretty much already knew).

and i agree with CCP that Lou would be much more likely to hit/run with Theriot batting rather than Fukudome.

No out runners are still worth a lot more than one-out runners, even with the DP possibilities.
