There have been few teams that I've had as much anticipation for as the 2009-2010 Boilermakers and the 2010-2011 Boilermakers. I think the 2009 Cubs and 2006 Bears are the only ones that top them. It's kinda funny that every one of those teams can be best described as disappointing.

Kinda funny. Mostly just sad. I was really looking forward to watching Purdue play this year.

Purdue is still going to be very good. Robbie Hummel isn't all that great. Tough loss, but I sitll think they can be a very, very good team.

I hate to admit this, but I am extremely happy. Go back to mediocrity Purdue.

Classy. I wouldn't count on Purdue going back to mediocrity anytime soon.

Oh, has Painter been recruiting another super class that nobody knows about? Because otherwise, yeah they are in for a bit of a slide.

If by 'super class' you mean four star recruit after four star recruit, then yes. Purdue will have the same number of four star recruits on the roster next year as they did last year. Maybe it's more about coaching ability? Could be?

In college basketball it's all about talent, not coaching ability. Also accrording to Rivals since your big 3 showed up in '07 Painter has had 10 3 star recruits and 5 4 stars. Not exactly 4 star after 4 star.

All about talent? I don't agree with that. Coaches are important in any sport but I'd put a college basketball coaches importance 2nd behind a football coach.

I wouldn't. In college Basketball who are the best coaches going right now? Cal, Self, Roy Williams, K? Of the four of them the only one I would say is a great x and o coach is K. The rest do a great job of coaching during the recruiting period.

Hummel isn't that great? I'd say he was the best player on that team, and they don't have much depth. I'd drop them down to 6th in the Big 10 now.

I'd say those guys know what they're doing strategically, for the most part. Rick Barnes has proved all the talent in the world can't get you anywhere.

Plus I think there are a lot of guys at 2nd tier programs who get decent talent and coach it up into conference and even Final 4 type teams...happens every year.

Izzo is definitely in the top 4.

I'm also really high on Jamie Dixon. He doesn't get tremendous talent at Pitt but he focuses like hell on defense and they seem to always over perform a lot of the time, especially last year.

A few years ago I would've put Howland up there too but I'm not sure what the hell is going on at UCLA.

Hummel gave them range. Plus, as ryan pointed out, he is their best player period. Moore can shoot the three, but he is best working in the lane and creating his own shot. Unless someone emerges that can stretch teams out defensively, everyone is going to just crowd inside and shut down one (Jajuan Johson) of their two scoring threats and make Moore beat them them on the perimeter.

The only other chance they have is if one of their big guys steps up and becomes a third scoring option. Even then though, Purdue's offense doesn't work that great with two inside threats. The motion offense worked so well with a catch and shoot guy like Hummel who could also distribute well. Not to mention he was a great defender. If you watched Purdue last year before and after the Hummel injury, they were a totally different team.

I like Painter a lot and I think he's an excellent coach, but he has his work cut out for him.

Howland is attempting to prove the importance of a point guard.

He's not getting the same type of talent that he was.

Collison, Afflalo, Westbrook, Mbah Moute, et. al. were good, not great recruits. Farmar and Love were the true super prospects. I mean they're still getting high 4s and the occasional 5s. He's just not getting the sleepers who are turning into first round picks.

Not top of the Big East type talent.

Eh, I mean Dejuan Blair was as good as pretty much anyone that came into that conference in that time frame, no?

So he's doing a worse job of identifing talent? Or he is getting worse as a coach? I just think the two big things a college coach can do is identify talent and then get it on campus. Then stay out of the way.

Tim is right - Jerime Anderson might have been the worst BCS conference point guard last season. He was getting lit up by NAIA teams in preseason last year. The 2008 #1 rated recruiting class has been a bust. It doesn't help that California high school basketball has gone into the crapper and Howland can't seem to get a PG on campus (whiffing on Abdul Gaddy, Ray McCallum, Josiah Turner and soon Quinn Cook).

Identifying lesser rated talent has taken a hit since his best assistant left 3 years ago to coach Santa Clara.

i want illinois to be the best in the big ten, but i also want competition. shoving it down purdue's throat with hummel on the court would have been satisfying.

Trust me Sulley, if Illinois wins the Big Ten you'll be plenty satisfied.

no he won't

Correct. Purdue will still be good, but losing a guy like Hummel is a big blow to that team.

I'm really hoping Sandi Marcius can fill the void somewhat, although he's not going to be the outside threat that Hummel was. That's going to have to come from someone like D.J. Byrd.

We know what we've got with JJ and Moore. In my opinion, DJ Byrd is going to make or break this season. Byrd or maybe Terone Johnson has to be the third option. Everyone knows JJ is going to be doubled and Moore will get plenty of attention too. Barlow isn't a good enough shooter, and I don't really expect much out of the new big guys (Marcius/Carroll) their first year.

Everything I heard going into last season made Marcius sound fairly polished for a freshman, so my expectations are somewhat high for him. Not First-Team-All-Big-Ten high, but I expect him to be a much better inside presence than Calasan ever was, especially considering his size. Hopefully, he's had some time to shake off the rust from sitting out a season with a broken foot. I'm hearing from multiple sources (I think even you may have mentioned something similar on here awhile back, as well) that Bade has improved by leaps and bounds over last season. I don't expect Barlow to be an outside scorer, but he has the potential to be able to create shots inside the arc and drive to the basket. Hopefully, he's matured a bit, since he was kind of a d-bag as a freshman.

ETA: I also hope Ryne Smith's playing time is significantly reduced this season.

I'd expect more out of Bade than any first year big man. The guys Purdue brought in aren't the 5 star type, and thus probably won't have much impact as freshmen. I don't even expect much more than 12 minutes of being a capable backup out of Leonard.

Normally, I would agree with this, but it's tough for me to forget just how bad he looked as a freshman. I'm hoping the reports are true, and he really has stepped up his game.

Dan Dakich said on his radio show today that Cody Zeller to IU is a done deal. He better not be full of it or I'll kneecap him.

He also said two other commitments will immediately follow which I'd assume will be Hanner Perea and Yogi Ferrell. \:D/
