One of best players in NFL history period.

you just heard that on sportscenter, didn't you?

I don't really watch Sportscenter and didn't see any of it today. Sando, the ESPN NFC West blogger, had a debate when Jerry Rice was announced as HOF of whether or not he should be called the best player ever. I was curious what non-glamor position guys were out there and in looking up Bruce Mathews (I knew of his Pro Bowl streak) I saw something about Merlin Olsen's streak. I then read a bunch of stuff about him. All I knew of him before that was he was in the HOF and had a cool name.

Oddly enough, the cancer he died of (mesothelioma) is the one caused by exposure to asbestos. He has a lawsuit (well, his family does now) pending in California against the usual group of defendants that get sued in these cases.

Why do I not remember Merlin Olsen being an actor? I remember his former teammate Fred Dryer being an actor after his football career.

Merlin Olsen probably wouldn't be considered the best player on his own team. That's not really a knock on him but he will probably always be overshadowed by Deacon Jones.

I don't remember much about Olsen as an announcer but he was better than Dan Dierdorf though practically anybody would be.

No love for Little House on the Prairie? I had to look him up on imdb because I couldn't remember the name of the other show (Father Murphy), and found this gem:

"NFL Monday Night Football" .... Himself - Los Angeles Rams Defensive Tackle / ... (13 episodes, 1970-1976)

Billboards, lame TV commercials, etc. But it's an extremely lucrative business for them.

It's a very easy disease to tie to an environmental cause. Makes it a more winnable case.

I do get tired of the commercials though. I think 99% of the people know by now if they get mesothelioma they should seek legal advice.

10-20 guys. Merlin Olsen is in the conversation for best player along with Rice and others.

I rarely hear that conversation because trying to pinpoint a single player, out of all the positions and eras of football, who is the best ever is pretty much impossible to do.

I hear more on which player of a certain position was the greatest. Easier to compare skill sets.
