D'Backs Designate Byrnes For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 15 at 1:52pm CST]

The D'Backs have designated Eric Byrnes for assignment, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic (via Twitter). The D'Backs will presumably have trouble trading Byrnes, who has some no-trade protection and will make $11MM this year. The club may well end up releasing him within the next ten days.

If they release Byrnes, the D'Backs will have obtained a hugely disappointing return on the three-year $30MM deal they signed the outfielder to in 2007. In the 482 plate appearances he's made under the new deal, Byrnes hit .218/.271/.382. Byrnes, 34 next month, was a positive on defense in nearly 900 innings the last two seasons, according to UZR.

Any interest in Byrnes as our 4th outfielder after he is officially DFAd. We'd obviously get him for the minimum.

dude hit .218/.271/.382 over the last two seasons

may as well have Lenny Harris running around out there

His last healthy season he hit .286/.353/.460/.813 with 21 HRs. Some team will sign him. He typically hit's lefties much better in his career (even his last 2 horrible years he put up .768 and .817 OPS against lefties) and would be a defensive upgrade. If we could get him playing RF for minimum salary and platooning with Fukudome, it wouldn't be the worst option. It certainly wouldn't be the best option either. If there are 10 options Byrnes would be like 6th assuming the other options are the names we've heard floating around. High risk/slightly above medium reward. Sounds sexy doesn't it?

He's very injury prone. Rather have Reed.

Because Johnson is always healthy?

Also, we'd be paying Byrnes the minimum (500k?) while Reed would make probably $1.5M or more.
