I also think the A's had money to spare in the budget and may have felt there was little good left out there to sign other than Sheets. He may have provided them the best payment on an investment without any long term commitment.

Wow this is a risky signing for the A's. I'm glad the Cubs stayed away from any type of salary like that.

There's nothing in that article that says the Cubs want Marshall in the rotation. It says Marshall likes starting better- which we already knew. Marshall also says he likes relieving which says that he thinks he'll end up working out of the pen.

The rotation probably comes down to Gorzelany 4 and Smardz 5 unless he's really terrible in ST or Silva is shockingly good- by which by mean not horrible.

The Cubs will have the guys pitching the best starting next year. If Marshall pitches better then Gorzelanny or Samardzija or Silva he will be the 5th starter(4th starter to start the season). Honestly I have no problem with the Cubs seeing what they got with those guys to start the year. If the unlikely situation happens that Gorzelanny, Marshall, Samardzija and Silva all struggle. Well then we can add a serviceable 5th starter type during the season. But with the way the Cubs have put together starting rotations under Rothschild(other then 06), odds are they will get at least one of these guys pitching well.

I predict that we end up grossly overpaying for 3 months of Sheets services in July.

I predict Sheets is on the DL and not available in July.

Sheets is having a rough go of it so far this spring.

Ben Sheets(notes) was battered for 10 runs without retiring a batter in his latest poor showing, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Oakland Athletics 13-5 Monday.

Sheets signed a one-year, $10 million contract with Oakland after missing last season with elbow problems that required surgery. He gave up eight hits and a walk, and another batter reached on an error.

No surprise. It wouldn't surprise if Sheets puts up an ERA around 4.50 this year.
