Sort of an odd pickup for a team who likely wont be able to compete, even in a division as watered down as the AL Central.

It's for less than $2 mil so it's not horrible. Still, not a great move for a team that's rebuilding and has some nice young outfielders.

I'd rather have Pods at 1/$1.75 than Byrd at 3/$15. Better yet, how about a platoon of Reed Johnson and Fuld for the same as Pods is getting paid. Hendry just loves wasting money on average players.

You can still re-sign a guy you don't offer arbitration to. Like the A's paying Jack Cust less than what he got paid last year.

As mentioned Reed would have made twice easily what Pods is going to make.

 

As for Pods vs Byrd, here are their respective OPS':

 

Pods: .721

Byrd: .762

 

Byrd is also two years younger and has had an 80-100 point advantage in OPS each of the past three seasons. Consider also that Byrd (0.0 career UZR/150) is a better defender than Pods (-5.6 career UZR/150) in center and Byrd was the better addition. Byrd is average being paid a slightly below average salary (maybe average salary). Pods is below average and being paid as such.

Had the Cubs elected to forego finding a center fielder in free agency and go with your proposed Johnson/Fuld platoon, do you believe they would have been able to get Johnson to return for less than his $3 mil 2009 salary? Or, conversely, when Reed signs elsewhere, do you believe he will do so for less than that?

so you're admitting that marlon byrd is a league average player? if so, then why are you upset about him making 5 mil? 5 mil a year for a league average position player is not a lot

Something like 1/3.5 or 2/6. Hes not exactly generating a lot of interest from other teams.
