Odd deal. Not sure how Cabrera really helps the Braves. Plus, didn't the Yanks get rid of Vasquez the first time because they didn't think he had the makeup to pitch in New York?

I'd say that sounds a bit fishy too trying to reacquiring vazquez like that. Maybe it's part of a 3 way trade with the Cubs for Z haha. Would never happen but would make more sense.

Yankees close to a trade for with a pitcher, not a salary dump trade (don't know if Z would be considered a salary dump trade?). per MLBTR

I doubt it's Z. If it were, Bruce would be all over it.

From MLBTR:

Yankees Closing In On Javier Vazquez

By Howard Megdal [December 22 at 8:34am CST]

8:34am: The Yankees are closing in on a deal for Vazquez, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (via Twitter). Heyman says the Yankees will acquire Vazquez and Boone Logan for Melky Cabrera, Mike Dunn and a prospect.

The Yankees are lucky they have a mystique that surrounds all their players that makes people think they're actually good. Melky Cabrera and a toss in for a guy coming off a year in which he was 4th in Cy Young voting and 2.87 ERA and 1.02 WHIP and 238 K's is unreal. Sure it's odd that this is the first year Vasquez has had extreme success, but he's a K machine and an innings eater who should be able to draw far more value for what he's capable of providing.

BTW, check out this awesome sponsor message on Melky Cabrera's BR page...

Mike Cameron? Dude, has a career .340 OBP and he's 37. Melky, maybe now that you have a ring people will back off and remember you're 24 (with a career .331 OBP). There's plenty of time for the power to come. Time to start mashing, Leche.

Sounds like a cost saving move. They can't afford Vazquez and there are only a few teams out there with the ability to absorb that kind of money. It's too bad the Cubs didn't have some money laying around this offseason. Look at how Hendry has been crying about not having any money this offseason, yet how quickly he threw a 2 year contract at a middle reliever.

The guy doesn't know how to sit on a dollar. If it is in his hand, he wants it spent.

I guess it is being confirmed that there was at least a discussion about Zambrano heading to the Yanks. We would have accepted Kei Igawa's two years at $4 million per year contract in the deal.

So the discussion has been confirmed, even though the front office originally denied any talks regarding Z. I wonder if they are actively shopping Zambrano around, or if this really did just happen to be a call out of the blue from the Yankees.
