Just let the weeds grow out

So how little does the previous year's success matter? Was the world series window wide open for the '04 Tigers? All their good players were young and they had a blank check.

I'm sure it matters, but it's a case by case study, and Detroit's payroll wasn't going up for the 2004 season, they were still clearing out the old. It was 2005 when they started opening up the window.

The fact is the 2006 offseason saw the Cubs coming off a bad year and spending a crapload of money to try and get better. The window was definitely open.

Is anyone starting to feel that "letting the weeds grow out" is somewhat Ritters philosophy also? I mean so far Hendry hasn't signed anyone to any long term hampering contracts. Infact he's only spend what $7 mil over 2 years on Grabow so far? Moan about the contract, it's insignificant as far has hampering the Cubs going foward.

Maybe Ritters has told hendry about not trading any of our top prospects and hasn't given him much leeway with money for FA. If that's the case, I really like Ritters. Because if the rest of Ritters tenure will be simular to this offseason so far, I would like that.

Are you speaking about the weeds coming out of John Ritter's grave? If Hendry is taking advice from the dead this is a much more interesting offseason than it appears.

The dead could probably make better offseason moves than Hendry. :D
