Roto

The Phillies, Blue Jays and Mariners have agreed to a trade that will send Roy Halladay to Philadelphia and Cliff Lee to the Mariners, according to an SI.com report.

The exact terms of the deal have not yet been reported, although the Blue Jays were reportedly willing to pay some of Halladay's salary in the right trade. Lee and Halladay are both in the last year of their contracts, with Lee owed $9 million and Halladay's deal calling for $15.75 million in 2010. The Phillies are currently working on an extension with Halladay that would keep him in Philadelphia long term. He went 17-10 with a 2.79 ERA over 32 starts in 2009, spanning a league-high 239 innings.

Though its likely, Heyman just retweeted that he was a bit early and that he needs to confirm that cliff lee is going to the Mariners.

Just out of curiousity, if the lackey deal is done and the halladay deal is done, does anyone else other than me feel like the Yankees are feeling crappy right about now? I think the acquisition of Lackey or Halladay would have improved their club better than adding granderson. I think the Yanks had plenty of offense if they had just resigned Damon instead of adding granderson but now they added granderson but yet their rotation isn't as strong once you get passed CC, Pettite and Burnett. I think CC is the only real stud in that rotation.

To make things worse, how crappy would they feel if the Bosox picked up Gonzalez by trading bucholz.

The Mariners are making some noise this year...King Felix and Lee is a nice 1-2 punch...All they need is some power in the middle of that lineup with Ichiro and Figgins at the top and they have a pretty good chance in the AL west

Are you saying Bradley to the Mariners? ;)

I'm hearing King Felix is going to the bluejays..... ha ha jk but wouldn't that be dumb, if not a horrible trade for the bluejays.

I guess so.

Wow I first thought it was just Halladay to the phillies without lee going anywhere. I was sick to my stomach thinking of a rotation headlined by Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Myers, Happ and a lineup with Rollins, Utley, Howard, Ibanez, Werth. Virtual all star team.

Hm. This is a bit of a stunner. If the Phillies were going to get Halladay, I would've never thought it would involve parting with Cliff.

Should be interesting to see how all the pieces fit, but Lee to Halladay seems like a pretty lateral move for the Phils.

Not sure what the motivation for that would be from their standpoint.

I like Lee, but I don't think it's lateral at all. Lee is not as good as Halladay.

Also, where does Milton Bradley fit into all of this?

Its probably only a good move if they sig Halladay to a long term deal, since that was becoming a potential issue with Lee.

That, and Halladay is the better pitcher and not that much older (only what, 1 to 2 years?).

Halladay gets an extension with the trade. It's gonna be hard to beat the Phillies for the next few years. I'd like to say Lee and Halladay would give you similar numbers, and they might, but we haven't see what Halladay can do outside the AL East for a full season yet.

Sources are saying Halladay has agreed to sign a long term extension as part of the deal. The sources are also reporting Halladay has agreed to take a smaller contract than what he could have gotten in free agency to be part of the Phillies. If you are a Phillies fan you have to love hearing that.

Phils must have thought that Lee wasn't going to re-sign. They lock up an ace now instead of waiting until next off-season to see if they could re-sign Lee. Hard to really argue with it.

I'm wondering what Toronto gets back here. I don't recall Seattle really having a loaded farm system. My guess is one of the Phillies top prospects is also in this.

I've seen Michael Taylor (Phillies) and Phillipe Aumont (Mariners) are the two known names, who would head to Toronto. Nothing has been mention about what other prospects could be going.

Exciting deal, but I'm a little curious about the Phillies point of view here. Is the difference between Lee and Halladay really worth giving up more top prospects?

yeah i really dont see the point in that to be honest. I think they just didnt like Lee to begin with and always had plans to pursue Halladay. I'm just glad this trade went down because it means the yankees aren't getting halladay. If the yankees dont sign Matt Holliday, i'm not sure you can say the yankees have improved this offseason. Just thinking about next season, I'm not sure Granderson's numbers will be that much better than the numbers Damon put up. And their rotiation isn't that good. If the Bosox trade bucholz for Adrian Gonzalez, I think i'll pick the red sox over the yanks in that division because of their rotation.

It's a very interesting deal obviously, but I'm not sure Halladay is a true upgrade from lee, especially if there's prospects coming from Philly as well. My guess is that Philly can get Halladay locked up to a more team-friendly deal than what Lee would have agreed to.

Lee said he wouldn't give a discount and has expressed going into the open market. Halladay said he would agree to extension worth less than what he would've got in free agency. So i a sense it made sense for the Phils in that aspect. But yeah, not sure if i would've given that much up, for a second when the trade was announced i thought it would be Lee + Halladay 1-2 punch in Philly but after i heard they traded Lee, not sure it was a huge upgrade.

Yeah, if the Yankees don't get Holliday they should be worse just by virtue that they're an old team and that several guys are coming off of very good years that are probably not going to be repeated.
