Seriously, you have to actually possess a great tight end before you can trade one away.

Desmond Clark is signed through 2010 right? There was speculation of the Bears cutting him but when hes healthy hes a good blocker and almost a lock for 40 catches. I think they should hold on to him. This way Olsen can share some of his tight end duties and still line up in the slot. Would Martz put him in the slot though? You hear names like Az-Hakim and Hester, so I'm assuming Olsen might be limited to the TE position almost exclusively? Don't know what Martz did in San Fran and Detroit. I would like to see him used like Dallas Clark, which I think Turner was sorta trying to do with him. Even if hes been a bit of a disappointment I think he's on the right track, especially with Cutler throwing him the ball. He just needs to run more routes than those 5 yard hitches and outs so that he can use his speed to seperate. I can't think of one good seam route from Cutler to Olsen last year.

first we'd have to get a great tight end, or even a good one

The Bears fired Bobby Depaul, who was the pro personel guy since the pre-Angelo days, I believe. Not sure what this means, other than I assume they will have some fresh blood in the front office.

Hub thinks it's a bad move because..........wait for it......

.....Bobby was the one guy he could get info from for his reporting.

Tim Ruskell's name will be front and center as the likely candidate to succeed Bobby DePaul as director of pro personnel for the Bears until he's hired or someone officially rules him out.

Ruskell worked under general manager Jerry Angelo for 14 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They both began with the organization in 1987, Angelo taking over as the director of player personnel and Ruskell getting a start as a regional scout. Ruskell ascended to director of college scouting in 1992 and remained in that role until he took over Angelo's spot when he departed for the Bears in 2001.

It's that background that makes Ruskell, the former general manager of the Seattle Seahawks, a seemingly good fit with the start of free agency 17 days away.

The move doesn't bother me. It's just weird timing. Why not do this back when you were firing other people instead of 2 weeks before free agency?

Sounds like Angelo wants someone that will go along with what he wants now that he is in "save my job at all costs" mode.

If I was trying to save my job and had experienced failure for 3 years straight, I would definitely be making changes.

And that's all well and good...just seems like he drug his feet on making those changes.

It seems to me a seperate issue from the rest of the changes. Perhaps something happened over the past month that caused Angelo to lose trust in the guy, like leaking news about the coaching hires or getting in the way of those hires, and/or getting in the way of potential moves the team wants to make.

Yeah, this could easily be something that's materialized in the last month or so be it in regards to the coaching changes and/or evaluation of players moving forward. This might not have been some Angelo planned to do all along.

i'm embarassed because i thought rolle was a cb. didn't he come out of college as a cb?

Yes, he was drafted as a CB. The positives for Rolle is that he is a good tackler, has shown the ability and range to be a strong FS, is a ball hawk, can man up against a WR or TE in a 3 or 4 wide set (since he is a former CB), has great speed, and is just 27 years old and is still getting better. The negatives for Rolle as far as the Bears are concerned is that because he has those abilities and is so young that he will likely seek a contract making him the one of the top 3 highest paid safeties in the game.

There will be a ton of competition for Rolle. There's about 15 teams that desperately need a FS. Many of those teams are close to being Superbowl contenders. So, the Bears will likely have to compete with Miami (his hometown), Giants, Eagles, possibly the Jets, Texans, possibly the Saints (if they can't agree w/ Sharper) to name a few. I don't think the Bears would be willing to compete with the money that will be thrown Rolle's way, but he'd be worth it.

He also has a cannon if you put him in the wildcat.
