One candidate for the Bears' offensive coordinator job who likely can be crossed off the list is Charlie Weis.

The former Notre Dame coach is far along in his discussions to join the Chiefs, and probably will become the offensive coordinator for Todd Haley soon.

It is possible that Weis could resurface as a candidate for the Bears job if talks broke off with the Chiefs, but a source close to the situation said no one expects that to happen.

The leading candidate for the Bears' position at this point could be USC assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates. While in Denver, Bates was Jay Cutler's quarterbacks coach.

The Bears have reached out to USC offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates about succeeding Ron Turner in that role for them, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Bates was the quarterbacks coach in Denver when Jay Cutler played for the Broncos, and the two have a strong relationship. The Tribune reported earlier that Bates made sense as a candidate.

Schefter also tweeted that the Bears could approach Jedd Fisch at the University of Minnesota, who also worked with Cutler.

It's easy to see why the Bears are Weis' second choice though.

Really? A crappy organization with a crappy coach who could easily lose his job in the near future? Sounds like they are similar situations. I could see why Weis would sign with the first one to offer the job, but I don't see why KC would be his first choice of Chicago.

How about to get out of the area? In Chicago, he'd be around the same fan base and same media that tore him up while he was ND.

Agreed.

There are also varying degrees of crappiness and the Chiefs beat the Bears there by a considerable margin... both as an organization and in terms of home cities.

I was thinking of the fact that it's a QB who Weis is familiar with, and also because it's generally accepted that the Bears is a one-year job.

Which means that he can also potentially throw that back in their faces to somedegree if he joins the Bears as the OC and their offense looks and performs better.

it would be a typical bears hiring though. they only hire pro position coaches or college coaches/assistants without previous pro experience (unless it was with them in the same capacity) to fill their coordinator positions just like they always hire coordinators without previous pro head coaching experience to fill their hc position.

they will never go for a big name, whether that's because of power/control issues or whatever.

Someone just said on ESPN 2 that one or more of the fired offensive assistants called Cutler a "coach killer" in that he'll do everything you want in practice and then just go off script during the game.

Whatever.

There's that too. Turner is the only assistant they've hired with previous NFL experience at the position. They usually go for new people, which would seem to point more in Bates' direction.

Well of course. He doesn't get hit in practice.

So I guess this means Jay will ~gasp!~ call an audible or two. Oh, the horror!

he must have been changing the plays in the huddle then, because i've rarely seen him change plays at the line. i thought that was something he needs to work on, recognizing coverages and changing protections. it's something he doesn't do well to this point.

Apparently the guy that said it on ESPN2 was Jim Trotter, and apparently Trotter had called Cutler a "Coach killer" two weeks ago...

Until there's a name attached to it, I call BS.

Yeah, a game speed pass rush that consistently cuts through your o-line like a hot knife through butter may cause re-evaluation.

And in practice the plays actually work...

mostly because its going against the Bears defense.

haha, yeah.

"in practice, cutler was always making his reads and throwing the ball, but on gameday, he was all getting punched in the crotch and falling down and screaming in pain. what the [expletive]? [expletive] coach-killing sonofabitch."

I'm not one who needs a big name head coach, or a DC who has been a DC before or an OC who has been an OC before. But I do need to see more NFL coaches rather than the typical Lovie "teachers" who come up from the college ranks. His first staff was a joke. And it never got better as Turner showed up and then Rivera left.

I think Bates has enough pro experience to qualify, but if he's the OC, I also want a professional coach as the QB coach, and most importantly an NFL offensive line coach.

As for a random assistant with the "coach killer" comment, coaches are notorious CYA douchebags. Almost every single one of them blames the execution of their gameplans instead of their gameplans themselves. Failed Bears offensive coaches can really only hope that somebody in charge of hiring falls for the coach killer moniker so they can still get jobs after the abysmal job they've done for years.

Eh. I don't know. Weis' really isn't all that innovative. His offense is basically the West Coast offense with a few modifications. I think it'd be a lot more similar to Ron Turner's offense than most people would like.
