since the yankees spent $1.7 billion in the decade and only won two world series i disqualified them and voted for someone else.

They dominated in a tough division, and the money actually brought results. I think you can criticize and say what you want about the money, but the only other team that got a vote, Boston, spent a ton themselves. There's no question the Yankees are the team of the decade and their results were fantastic. The luck nature of the playoffs negates any negativity of only winning 2 WS with 9 playoff appearances.

the red sox spent "only" $1.168B, or about more than $50M less per season, and appeared in only one fewer playoff and won the same number of world series.

The WS totals are not that noteworthy, given the luck involved in moving on in the playoffs.

NY spent a lot, but there's no doubt their results were better. Boston spent a hell of a lot more than the Cardinals, but it's debatable if their results were any better.

Cost efficient isnt' the same as the best team.

I voted with what each team's fans would consider success. If you told Yankees fans that you would win 2 titles in 2000's they would probably be somewhat disappointed. However if you told Red Sox fans you would win 2 titles they would be ecstatic. To me Red Sox fans would consider the 2000's by far their most success decade in the last 9 decades. Yankee fans would consider it one of the worst ones.

people keep saying this but it isn't really true. the playoffs are not just a crap shoot. there have been things that are proven to win in the playoffs - front line power pitching, good bullpens, good defense. for a lot of this decade the yankees have lacked good front line power pitching (mussina, pettitte are good pitchers but fall more on the side of finesse); they've always had rivera as an anchor but their middle relief has been problematic for years; their defense has declined as a number of players got older (bernie williams, jeter, sheffield, posada). it's not a surprise that they've struggled in the playoffs.

i made my own rules.

I'm no fan of the Yankees, but I think it is hard to objectively say there is any team that has even an argument for best team. The Yankees have the most wins of the decade, they have the best winning percentage of the decade, they have the most division titles, and they have the most playoff appearances. They are tied for the number of World Series wins.

If another team had won more WS, I would probably vote that way since that is the ultimate goal. On the other hand, the Yankees are equal to all in that category, and have had more regular season success than anyone as well. We tend to forget a lot of that because most of the success was toward the beginning of the decade, but they are still the best team.

It doesn't matter to me what they spent or how they achieved it. They did it within the means available to them. I don't like the team and wish hard times on them, but there is little doubt in my mind they should be considered the best team of the decade.
