Days like this remind those of us eternal optimists that the Bulls are a mediocre basketball team, and one coached by Vinny Del Negro at that.

Most entertaining part of the game was reading UMFan's sulleyesque meltdown on RealGM as it was happening.

Ouch, I was only one in a crowd and no way the worst. I don't let myself do that on here anymore.

Regarding VDN coming back next year, Boers and Bernstein and Laurence Holmes on WSCR, continue to say their sources have said VDN is gone no matter what. Today they said even if the Bulls won a championship, VDN would still be fired. Take it for what its worth

I think it's pretty safe to say if the Bulls won a championship this season VDN would still have his job.

I obviously don't get to see the Bulls very much, but is VDN really all that bad? I mean, is he at least improving? When Mike Brown first came to Cleveland, he was pretty much the worst offensive coach in the history of basketball. Defense is his thing, and he's good at coaching that, but he knew next to nothing about running an offense. He has slowly gotten better and better, and I'd say he's probably getting pretty close to becoming an average coach on the offensive side.

Or, is VDN just that bad? He hasn't exactly had a stellar team to work with.

He has a perfectly average team to work with complete with a true superstar. We've seen the Bulls have too many halves or quarters where everything breaks down even to the fundamentals. You can't dump that all on the players. We've seen too much glaringly stupid playcalling and streategies (or lack thereof) to give VDN a break and blame it all on the team.

Rose is an absolute stud. And, he'll probably continue to get better and better. But, I'm not sure Derrick is the type of player that you can just automatically assume should make a team a contender.

Gibson is awesome.

Uh, no he's not.

For a 26th pick. I mean.

That's a pretty important clarification that you left out. Sure, he's awesome for a 26th pick because most of those guys aren't even capable of becoming basic rotation players. But he's nowhere near, and never will be near, awesome.

And for all the talk about how great he's been playing lately, he's basically been averaging 8 points and 8 boards over the last month. He's serviceable for 20-25 minutes a game, but should never be the starting PF on a good team. I think he's growing into the Bulls' version of Ryan Theriot. Lots of fans inexplicably love the guy.

8 and 8 in 26 minutes. There's many teams that don't even get that out of starters let alone a rookie. Thomas never did it for an entire season.

It's a lot easier to find Ryan Theriot than it is to find a good backup PF that is a serviceable starter as a rookie. He's old but I don't think he's reached his ceiling quite yet. If he could add bulk I would challenge the assertion that he should NEVER start for a good team. It's not like he would be anywhere near the worst big man on a title contending team. Look at the pu pu platter of crap Duncan played with up front after Robinson retired.

And if you sign Bosh, Booz, Amare, etc. then great, you've got a great 3 man rotation in the front court for the next 5 years.

Tyrus also never got consistent minutes like Taj is getting. The Bulls drafted Tyrus as a project and then expected him to play like a 10 year vet.

Tyrus never got consistent minutes because he's probably the dumbest player in franchise history. Until the light bulb turns on he'll only ever tittilate, sadly.

Anecdotally, it seems like those tweener forwards rarely turn out. If they turn out they're usually Al Harrington types. You can't win with those kinda guys. If you're lucky you get Josh Smith.
