Me and my friend were discussing Wilkens top ten drafts outside rounds 1-5 the other day and just wanted to see what you guys think.

Some guys we came up with J Jax, Cales, Raley, McNutt

Also best guys that they didnt sign Tony Zych, Dan Sheppherd

Discuss!!!

If you're not considering how likely these guys were to sign, then Sonny Gray and Victor Sanchez are clearly the best who got away.

Sonny was never going to sign regardless, they were wasting a pick by selecting him.

Wasn't he Cashner insurance, the same way Sanchez was Vitters insurance?

I think drafting Sonny was more to build a connection to the team in case we try to draft him in the future. Maybe get us a bit of a deal. Plus the extremely minor chance he would change his mind when we put the money on the table.

you should be able to draft high schoolers, pay for their college and then have their rights when they graduate. like nba teams stashing players in europe or something.

Sanchez hasn't been the stud in college that I think some people expected. That said, maybe he'll break out next year and move on up.

I think the NHL system would be more apt for this comparison.

I think that would just open up a lot of potential problems between the drafting team and the school that the draftee attends. What would happen if the drafting team feels like their draftee is not getting adequate playing time or is being misused. Could the drafting team sue the school that allows a draftee to throw 200 pitches in a game and then blows out his arm?
