Can't read this at work. Did the relationship turn sour or something?

The Rangers did what they felt they had to do in offering me a one-year deal," Jaramillo said. "That's understandable with the sale of the club and the situation the club is in. I just felt that I wanted some security, and the way to get security is to go out and find out where you stand on the market.

Not that I'm discounting his ability as a hitting coach, but how much of his success with players can be attributed to the Rangers' park? The place is a bandbox to begin with.

FWIW, the Rangers fans down here are glad that he's not coming back.

What are the reasons given as to why?

Here's a quote from a friend who is a very knowledgable baseball fan on why they are glad he's gone.

Over-aggressiveness. Swing for the fences approach. His hitters don't work counts. When you look at away stats over the last decade, Rangers near the bottom of the league in AVG, OBP, and OPS, which leads me to believe park effects had a lot to do with his "success".

I see. Thanks.

I'm also wondering what exactly makes Jaramillo so appealing. Someone said earlier he's "without a doubt the best hitting coach in the majors." I'm not even sure that can be quantified.

I credit him with Mark DeRosa and successfully fixing Andruw Jones

I think most hitting coaches have a few guys they can point to as success stories. Also, I'm not sure he really fixed Andruw Jones. Jones only had a 103 OPS+. I know that a big improvement over the previous few years, but that's hardly a notable accomplishment.

Is there any further substantial evidence why Jaramillo is a must-have guy?

Ive never been sold on hitting coaches being able to be a big help, however, I suppose Milton Bradley has his career year in Texas. maybe it was Arlington, maybe Rudy was a big part of it. Id be all about bringing on Rudy as a last ditch effort to salvage the Bradley situation.

Levine reporting that the Cubs are interested.

Bruce Miles agrees:

Jaramillo could top Cubs' wish list

Word out of Dallas this evening is that hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo has turned down a one-year offer to return to the Texas Rangers. He's under contract until Oct. 31, and it's believed the Cubs have some interest in hiring Jaramillo to fill their vacancy at hitting coach. GM Jim Hendry fired Gerald Perry in June and replaced him with Von Joshua, who was informed on the last day of the season that he would not be asked back in that capacity but that he could return to the minor leagues with the Cubs.

Jaramillo, who enjoyed a good working relationship with, of all people, Milton Bradley, was with the Rangers since 1995.

Ugh. Given his "over-aggressiveness" stance on hitting, I see this being a return to the hack and slash offense of 05-06. Why doesn't this organization recognize that they had a leading offense in 07 because of OBP?

Uhh I think they know that very well, and aren't as convinced as you that Jaramillo's teachings will fly in the face of that philosophy

Since 2000 (the furthest back I felt like checking, Jaramillo has been in Texas since 1995, I believe), here is how the Rangers have stacked up in terms of OBP against the rest of the AL:

2009: 12th

2008: 2nd

2007: 11th

2006: 9th

2005: 6th

2004: 11th

2003: 8th

2002: 6th

2001: 4th

2000: 6th

Here is how they stacked up with the rest of the AL in runs scored in that timeframe:

2009: 7th

2008: 1st

2007: 5th

2006: 4th

2005: 3rd

2004: 4th

2003: 5th

2002: 5th

2001: 3rd

2000: 9th

How much of the runs scored is Jaramillo and how much is The Ballpark In Arlington? I don't know.

So far we haven't seen anything that indicates Jaramillo has much to do with it. I think The Ballpark is a much bigger factor.

Not meant to sway you in any way, but it gives you an idea of who he is, I guess.

I win :P

Seems he's more about mechanics and less about approach. I think that's a good thing, as long as the team's mindset in terms of discipline stays where it is, and I think Lou is all about that.

Yeah, Jaramillo stresses power over contact. I think people are mistaking what is meant when others talk about his "aggressive" approach. It doesn't mean swing at the first pitch - it means try to beat the snot out of the pitch when you do swing.
