I've often wondered why I spend so much time, energy and money on this team. I wonder if I've set my sons up for a lifetime of misery. I wonder why I care so much.

But switching allegiances? Never.

They're like a drug. I'd probably have to go to a halfway house.

Sounds like it could make for a cheap, B-grade cable reality show. Help me name it.

I remember back in 2005 trying to tell myself that it was OK to root for the White Sox in the playoffs and World Series, that it was good to have a WS Champ in town. I couldnt make it happen and I rooted for the Red Sox, Angels, and even the Astros to beat them all the way.

I'm usually pretty apathetic to the White Sox. I didn't watch their 2005 season, but I did watch every post season game and rooted for them, and even stayed up late in Game 3 of the World Series that went late late against Houston. When they won, I didn't wear Sox gear or dance around in the street, but I was happy. It was Chicago and I thought it was cool.

I never bought the championship hat or the DVDs.

Personally, I don't understand the love one team and hate the other - I am not knocking those who do, but I don't think it is a prerequisite that you must hate the other. I've also found that many more Sox fans seem to adopt that as a rule than Cub fans (if you ever visit that one particular White Sox fan message board, half of them are talking about the Cubs and how they hate us - I hardly see anyone mention them here). A friend of mine in college at the time who was a big Sox fan got mad at me when I told him I was rooting for the Sox in '05. He said they didn't need me to root for them. To each his own.

I remember when I was about 16, I thought I would try to be a Padres fan b/c they had McGriff, Sheffield, Gwynn, etc.... and that lasted about a month. I love the Cubs too much. Always have. It doesn't change, I'm afraid.

The 2004 season really pissed me off a lot more.

It was great that we were in the playoffs in both 2006 and 2007, but neither of those years brought the emotion that was felt in 2003 when we went deep. The expectations in 2004 were really high and it was the team that really missed out at the end. To top that, they were crying about Chip and Steve, with Dusty Baker leading the charge. The entire organization clearly did not have their priorities straight, starting at least with Hendry.

This year reminds me of 2004, but at the very least, their lack of good ball this year didn't stir up the hope that 2004 did.

You must have been really drunk and on a lot of drugs if you thought the Cubs made the playoffs in 2006.

I meant 2007 and 2008.

Sometimes, I think being at the office messes up my mind just as bad as being drunk or drugs might.
