The Jaguars made it official today that their regular season home opener against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday will be blacked out on TV.

According to NFL policy, games are blacked out if all the non-premium tickets aren't sold 72 hours before the Sunday kickoff. Teams are allowed to ask for an extension if they're close to selling out, but the Jaguars did not request one.

Estimates are they're about 17,000 tickets short of a sellout but the team only said they have plenty of tickets available.

Between the Marlins and now the Jags, Florida needs to just have all their sports teams taken away from them.

nfl tickets cost too damn much...i don't blame the people for not going.

Same prices as college tickets. Cheaper in some cases.

i've never paid for a college fb ticket, so i couldn't tell you that...and are you talking face value or scalper value?

EBay and the like for college tickets. Considering I've never gone to a college football game other than in Neyland, I've only once bought face value tickets though - and they were $65 for barely getting in the stadium.

Working on it. I'm hoping to get tickets to 2-3 games this year, but that all depends of funds, obviously.

I won't be able to go Sunday, too short notice. I'm hoping to get Colts tickets and maybe another game or two.

colts tickets are pretty tough to come by provided the weather isn't shitty...i think that's why tix are going so cheap right now, a lot of people are scared of the forecast(rain).

They're expensive, but there are still tickets available on the Titans' main site. They're going pretty fast, though.

This is awesome.

I've always thought about this but it's way too radical to become commonplace in the NFL... the Pats SORT OF do it in that they seem to be a little more willing than most teams to go for it on 4th down, but yea...

That's a really cool article. Something like that would extremely radical for the NFL though....akin to adding the pass to the game I think. It would change just about every conventional strategy.

Less severe in the NFL, but I think there's some pretty solid evidence to support not punting when you get to a certain yard line....like the 45 or something like that.

In high school special teams are usually poor. Punting becomes far more likely to be a messy play. Some of the high school teams in my area can't really field a solid PK either, so they wind up going for two after most TDs.

Exactly. There are definitely big spots in the NFL where the quality of the kicking and punting game changes things, but there are also lots of spots where teams should go for it and don't. I've never really understood punting from the other team's 40, for instance... especially if it's 4th and short.

Didn't the Jags already close off part of their stadium with those huge tarps because they knew they would never sell those tickets? And they are still 17,000 short?

Are there markets (other than L.A.) that need an NFL team? Jacksonville and St. Louis otherwise should be contracted.

At Hester's peak, it might have been a good idea to try some onside kicks instead of kicking out of bounds.

I was about to ask how Jacksonville even got a team in the first place, and I was shocked to see that it's the biggest market in Florida in terms of the city's actual population...

Then again, it's the largest city in the country in terms of connecting land, so that's a bit misleading.

I think most coaches act on the fear of fan/management reaction if the field position switches and the other team scores, rather than adopting a policy of playing the odds. The way the mentality is, if it works 4 times but fails once, you'll spend the entire post-game presser answering questions about what a bonehead you were for not punting to pin them deep.

Anyone think an NFL team in Canada could work? Vancouver has an NFL-sized facility, and is a pretty large city. They currently get Seahawks games, I believe.

Surely Toronto could support the "ex-Jags" as well or better than Jacksonville.

Jon's a Bloomington, IN native (the SI writer/author). Just sayin'. And, yeah, the first name only is a furtive name drop.

Also, most NFL coaches are too conservative. This was one of my complaints with Coach Dungy -- don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan -- but his tactics were a bit archaic at times. Meaning, if your team has most of its money and big-name players tied up in offense, you should be extremely aggressive in fourth down situations instead of punting and relying on defense. The stats, even for inferior offenses, bear this out.

Toronto's proximity to Buffalo could be problematic. The Bills are even playing a game in Toronto this year. Not to say it couldn't work.

Yes, but haven't they been unable to work it out?

The chances of a privately-funded suburban stadium in the eastern San Gabriel Valley are looking more and more likely.
