*The Hawks are supposed out of the Ilya Kovalchuk sweepstakes. Latest rumor has the Flyers jumping in with supposedly an offer of

Briere and Van Riemsdyk plus a pick. Don't know how true that is, tho.

Looks like the Devils just got him. Great move for them.

Maybe, maybe not. But with the rumors of him leaving the NHL for the KHL in the offseason (I doubt it, but who knows) to give up two of your best prospects plus two high draft picks for an obviously rental, is an awfully high price to pay. Not to mention this still only makes the Devils the third best team in the East behind Pittsburgh and Washington.

Good move for the Devils, but an awfully expensive move.

i think the devils are definitely better than the pens now, and are prob right there with the hawks for the 3rd best team in the nhl.

this all changes on a week to week basis though. these are all elite teams.

If the Devils are better then Pittsburgh then it is very minute. One point separate the two teams, Penquins score 34 more goals then NJ. and the Devils have given 36 less goals then Pitt. So on paper I would say the teams are actually even. As for the Hawks, I think one can say the Hawks/Devils/Penquins cannot differentiate from each other, despite the Hawks having more points then Pitts and NJ.

I agree.

Hawks: +50

Devils: +21

Pens: +19

Devils are pre-Kovalchuk and the Pens are starting to become notorious for coming on strong at the end of the season and certainly have the credentials to say they are elite. Not saying the goal differentials aren't telling, just giving plausible excuses why those teams are at an equal level despite a huge gap in goal differential.

that's predicting that they might end up better. i'm talking aobut who is better right now, and it's the hawks.

and the pens "credentials" don't mean anything when talking about what team is better.

i dont think the pens are even a top 5 team, actually. i'd put the sharks, caps, hawks, devils, and canucks ahead of them, and you could make an argument for buffalo and LA being ahead of them also

who cares who is better now? At this point last year the Pens were struggling to make it to the 8th spot and the Ducks were not even in playoff contention. Yet the Pens won the Stanley Cup and the Ducks were the 2nd best team in the WC last year in the playoffs. Hawks fans should be happy about their success so far this year, but discounting teams at this point of the season is dangerous.

who is discounting teams? during the regular season, you talk about who is the best. right now i don't think there's any way you can say the pens are as good as the hawks.

aww how cute wings fans can't accept the decline of their team. anyway, i think this is the chicago blackhawks thread, so lets talk hawks.

big game tonight. hawks need to pick up their play and get as many points as they can before the olympics.

I don't see the Hawks dropping this one tonight, and St. Louis is a horrible team at home this season. I really think a sweep of this back-to-back is reasonable to expect.

Plus I'll be there tomorrow night, so they better put on a show...

are we even a top 3 team anymore?

where the [expletive] is the effort? the fire that was there earlier in the season is completely gone. they're just going through the motions right now.

and kane is just flat out bad right now. he's doing the same thing he did last season

Not right now but were in a horrid slump. We certainly have the talent to be a top 3 team.

Damn I was almost happy when Bulls won 5 in a row and Hawks started trip 5-2. Since then a combined 0-6. The story of Chicago sports

except the bulls collapsing again actually helps that organization

how so? I am pretty sure GarPax got the point that this team isn't good enough to stand pat.

Damn, the Hawks are pretty much guaranteed a top 3 seed because Nashville and Detroit are doing jack to catch up to the Hawks, but other teams are closing game gap in terms of best records in the west. Phoenix is now only 4 points behind the Hawks, LA 6 points. I remember just recently the Hawks had double digit leads on almost if not all teams in the West besides San Jose.

C'mon Hawks, snap out of it. It's like one day they looked at their jerseys and realized they were representing Chicago and collapsed.
