NSBB Radio is On-Air

As you all know, Tim has taken steps throughout the years to improve the technology and content of NSBB. Several weeks ago I spoke with Tim about technical issues for a sports site I had been planning. As we spoke it became more and more apparent that we wanted to accomplish similar things with our sites and rather than starting a new site we began planning a new extension to NSBB that could launch with the current upgrade Tim had already planned.

 

In the last couple weeks we have been recruiting talent to supply NSBB with the highest quality baseball material available. Most of the guys supplying podcast have hosted their own sports radio shows, or currently work on-air at a sports station. I think you’ll be impressed by the professionalism of the folks involved in this project. We’ve tried to recruit personalities from throughout the country to include content on a variety of teams and given them full creative control. Our request was for them to give us their take on everything baseball. Tim will include space for comments for each podcast and we encourage you all to interact with our podcasters.

 

Another exciting development is that we’ve received permission from Baseball America to host all of their podcast content here locally on NSBB. We'll be among the first sites to receive the content each time they release a new podcast. We’re also in conversations with other national providers of baseball content and hope to add more podcast content as we receive permission. So stay tuned…..

Thank you! We're excited to be able to put something like this together. There is more talent that will be sending podcasts through-out the weekend and we'll be uploading them as soon as we receive them.

 

In total, we've recruited around 8 different people that will providing podcasts every week until the end of the season. That's not counting the phone calls w/ talent today and next week that we've had preliminary talks with, but they have not committed to come aboard yet.

Chuck was the one that had the discussions with BA, but I believe we are the only authorized site other than iTunes to host their podcasts. I'm really excited that this might be a great way to develop some further relationships with BA and others.

Sounds like you guys have a pretty good grasp of, and plan for all of this mapped out.

If you need any help on the podcasting side of things let me know. I run the Around Comics podcast. It's not sports, but it is niche entertainment, and we've risen to be the #2 show in our category.

 

90% of the podcasts out there are garbage. Even the ones done by large media companies. It's a pretty unique medium.

 

There are a lot of pitfalls out there in managing and promoting web delivered audio entertainment. We fell through most of them in the last 5 years. :)

 

If you plan on doing a studio setup let me know and I can help guide you on equipment etc.

FYI, a duo from Boston have committed to join the podcast team and will have new content available the beginning of next week.

I added a comment to one of the podcasts (the one on free agent pitchers) to try out that feature. I discovered that, when you post a comment, it refreshes the page, and that if you do so while listening to a podcast it stops when you refresh. So it's probably best to wait until finished listening to the podcast before adding a comment. Fortunately I was so close to the end that I don't think I missed much.

So it's probably best to wait until finished listening to the podcast before adding a comment. Fortunately I was so close to the end that I don't think I missed much.

For now, I added a note to each podcast, "right click on player and choose "Download this song" if you wish to be able to: make comments while podcast is playing or navigate away from page without player closing"

 

Not the long term solution (I'll look for a way to pop up the podcast in a separate child window that will stay there if you navigate away), but it'll have to do for tonight.

They work together on a Saturday morning "all sports" show in the Boston area. We'll actually have three podcasters from the same radio station.

 

There's one more guy in Philly that looks like he'll be coming aboard as well and a gentleman from the Bay Area (Oakland, I believe).

 

It will probably be the end of next week before we're in full mode, but these guys are working as quickly as they can around their schedules to submit podcasts. In fact, a couple have contacted me today and expect to have new content to me this evening.
