If they are willing to move Theriot to 2B, they should ask Colorado what they need to add to Soto for Tulowitzki. If not they see what Boston has to say about what they need to add to Soto for Pedroia. Soto plus Gorzelany for either of those guys?

Might as well kick the tires on Pujols or Hanley Ramirez while we're at it

since we're talking about middle infielders, let's get utley for soto and wells.

Maybe the Yankees would be interested in a trade back of A Rod for Soriano+PTBNL.

What are you suggesting is a fair return for Reyes and what the Mets should do?

I'm honestly not sure what a fair return is for a shortstop who averaged a 5.5 WAR in his age 23-25 seasons and is still just 26. I was just suggesting that Lilly and Theriot is not fair value for that kind of player.

it most certainly is not. maybe if lilly were 30 and had 3-4 years of team-friendly contract left, and theriot were better and younger than he is. but theriot is average at best and lilly has one more year left on his contract.

fwiw, fangraphs ranked reyes as having the 20th-highest trade value back in july. i'm thinking that theriot and lilly were a long way from making that list.

True, but there are likely other variables at work if they decide to trade him. You have to remember that there are reports that the Mets Fo isn't happy with him, the owner losing a ton of money and needing to shed payroll, and Reyes is coming off a calf/hamstring injury. Lilly would be a pretty valuable pitcher for them pitching half his games in that stadium. Theriot is a cheap replacement for them. If we offered to pay some of Lilly's salary and throw in Fox and Carpenter or Flaherty we might be able to get a deal done.

the mets already have close to $50M coming off the books after this season. the mets would have only one season of ted lilly, and they're going to have a hard time contending next year with the phillies not losing much of anything. even if they do decide they want to move reyes, i highly doubt that there won't be other teams coming along with a better offer than a pretty good 33 year old pitche and a 30 year old middle infielder who's average at best, plus perhaps one or two mid-level prospects.

Reyes is owed 9M for next year, then a club option for 11M in 2011 (.5M buyout). I don't personally think he's going to be worth 9.5M next year, or 20M for the next two years. That's only due to his injuries though.

FWIW, FanGraphs has his assumed value at 21M in 07 (2.9 paid), and 26.4M in 08 (4.4 paid). So no matter what the Mets do, they've already got their moneys worth (and way more) for him.
