I guess I don't understand why anyone would hate the team. it isn't their fault that they missed a ton of games due to injury. Basically the only reason we aren't getting ready for the playoffs is because of a fluke injury to Aramis Ramirez.

not the whole reason, but definitely a large portion

Maybe I worded that poorly, not the whole reason for a down season, but the main reason. I still think we take the Wild Card if Aramis satyed healthy the whole year, or only missed a small portion like normal. Hell we might even win the division cause if we had Aramis the Cards might not have been close enough to us to even go get Holliday.

No vitriol. I'm just sick of hearing about how great it is to get in the playoffs back-to-back for the first time in a million years. This team's history isn't relevant to what they're doing now.

It's still a big accomplishment. This isn't football or basketball where half the teams make the playoffs each year.

They have one of the highest payrolls in the league and play in an absolute shithouse division. They should be in the postseason almost every year.

St. Louis is in the discussion for best team of the decade in all of baseball. How exactly does that make it a crap divsion? In this division the past ten years we have had some awesome teams. Just because we are in the biggest city and thus have the highest payroll, it really doesn't entitle us to blitz the division every year.

Not saying we should. But StL has been the only consistent competition. It's inexcusable that we haven't had more success this decade.

We've made the playoffs 3 times, with 2 near misses. They have the best player on the planet, a better coaching staff, and a better front office. Pretty easy to see why they have had more success.

That's what I mean. We've seen all this FO has to show us. Unless Ricketts turns out to be another Wilpon, it's imperative he gets better baseball people.

I didn't say I was ecstatic, I said "remember when we were?"

This team doesn't suck as bad as many suggest.

No, but it's not as good as others suggest, either.

The next 2-3 years are critical with most of our key players in their primes right now. You gotta do something with Lee, Ramirez, Z, etc now or you never will.

Astros had some very very talented teams in the first half of the decade too.

true. This was an off year. I believe the Cubs have positioned themselves to, with an average offseason, be favorites to win the division next year and several years into the future. I think the window was widest this year, with everyone favoring the Cubs entering the year. With the foundation you mention and inevitable rebound of Soriano and Soto (can they get worse?) in addition to the good core of young pitchers, there's no reason they won't contend for the next few years.

As I said before, the window was the widest entering this year. Unfortunately the list is long of things that went wrong.

the problem with the window being widest is that it can only get smaller from here. Time to reinvent.

I stand by my original statement that this was a good team and that 2009 will be remembered as another year that could have been in a string of quality teams.

I get your point (and agree with it) but making the playoffs in football is a decent accomplishment too.

Football also has a cap. Why do some people refuse to acknowledge just how large a financial advantage the Cubs have over their competition? Find someone who can make wiser use of the money.
