The only baseball reason to move to florida is that they'll provide facilities that are enough better to offset all the other reasons to stay in AZ.

How about the more beaches/more babes option?

That would hold if they were in Miami instead of Tampa.

Coked up supermodels > Meth addicted high school drop outs.

It's not Tampa though, it's Naples, so isn't more like washed up cougars? And while Arizona lacks beaches, I don't think it lacks in the babes department.

I would be willing to bet there are more babes in Southwest Florida during spring break/spring training than there are in the Phoenix area.

As far as "washed up" Cougars I think not. Cougar Town doesn't take place in Sarasota County by mistake. ;)

This would be perfect if they move to Florida. My wife's grandfather lives in Ft Myers from Fall to Spring. One of his three rental property's are open during that time so I would have a free place to stay plus use of a car. The only bad thing is the prices to that area get jacked up during Spring Training because the Minnesota Twins play down there.

I would blame most of that on the Red Sox rather than the Twins.

So far you look outnumbered Tim.

yeah, but I've given actual baseball logic for why AZ makes more sense in this thread. The votes for florida are "they'd be closer to me!"

If the reasons to stay in AZ were so compelling(my memory is that the main thing is having crappy FL weather impact the hub of your in-season operations), wouldn't we see a lot of teams leaving FL for AZ? I think it might be overblown.

It hasn't exactly been a flood of teams, but there have been several moving operations from FL to AZ over the past few years. Can't think of anyone going the other way.

I could see how you would think that. But I know for a fact tickets from Minneapolis/St Paul to Ft Myers go up because of the Twins.

My bad. I thought you said, "prices in that area get jacked up....."

Not that surprising but I'm with you, Tim.

So we'd be trailblazers for once 8-)

Of course Selig wants the Cubs to remain ... someone has to buy up those tickets to Maryvale! (And Phoenix Municipal, and Surprise, and Peoria, and Tuscon Electric ...)

early in the morn more like midnight/morn wgn was reporting the cubs signed a new 25 year contract with mesa or whoever to stay in mesa and they will build a state of the art facility. I think that's the main thing ricketts wanted and he got it. Good descision on his part to be tuff but in the end do what the fans really wanted.

Yeah, it was a good move to find a city in Florida and play off of them to get exactly what he wants from Mesa.

Ricketts knows how to do business.

I'm fairly certain this was mostly a Crane Kenney move.

I'm contributing to a story about the Mesa/Naples debate, if anyone has a strong opinion either way and wants to weight in, please drop me a message. Cheers!

Ricketts is still in charge and gets the final say. I'm sure he had something to do with the descision making.

Right, he had the final say, but Soul was talking about the process that led to that decision, which it seems obvious was set-up by Kenney long before Ricketts arrived.

yeah but Naples came into play before ricketts even took over. I'm sure he had some say before that but I gotta believe this was mostly Kenneys work

I was actually pretty impressed when I talked to Kenney at the convention.

This thing isn't done yet...

http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/02/will-cubs-tax-hurt-chance-of-staying-in-mesa.html

Jerry Reinsdorf is opposed to a plan to institute a surcharge on all Cactus League tickets to help fund the Cubs' proposed $84 million spring training complex in Mesa.

The Cubs are allowed to back out if the legislation is not enacted by July 12, or is the voters reject the funding.

Whether opposition to a "Cubs tax" by other major league owners would force the lawmakers to alter their funding plans remains to be seen. Naples remains an option for the Cubs if the plan doesn't go through.

Mesa's mayor pretty much slams Reinsdorf:
