The options for the remaining three call-ups are:

- Mitch Atkins

- Esmailin Caridad

- Marcos Mateo

- Jeff Samardzija

- Jeff Stevens

- Bobby Scales

(My predictions are Stevens, then Samardzija, then Caridad. Scales is an option, but he is in a big slump.)

There are also two players on the DL, who are eligible to come off:

- Reed Johnson (I think he's close, but not ready yet)

- Chad Fox (I don't think he will never pitch again)

Mitch Atkins was named PCL player of the week for his past two starts (a shutout and 2 ER's). I still don't think it's enough to get him back up here, though.

No Gaub? :(

Anyone could be an option, but these are the guys currently on the 40-man roster. My guess is that they won't add anyone new to the 40-man roster until after the season in order to save roster spots for free agents or trades (and maybe a Rule 5 pick). But there is very little reason otherwise not to add Gaub now.

I agree theres really no reason for Gaub to be on the team now, especially with Marshall, Gorz, and Grabow, but Gaub, along with Colvin are 2 guys I really hope they'll protect from the rule 5, so they may as well just put him on the 40 man now.

Not when someone in the front office is delusional and thinks the Cubs are still in the WC hunt and need to keep open a few roster spots for last minute help.

Does anyone know what the effect of placing Gaub or Colvin on the 40 man and calling them up in Sept. would have on their option clocks? Is there a difference between doing it now, or waiting until November?

As long as they were placed(and kept) on the major league roster for September, no option would be used.

I think Gaub getting called up is a no-brainer then. Depending on how Tennessee's season ends, I wouldn't mind seeing Colvin either.

I really wouldnt expect to see Colvin make the jump from AA at this point. Maybe this time next year depending how he does in Iowa. I just dont want to lose him to the Rule 5.

-Jeff Samrdzjias another possibility, but its probably in everyones best interest if he were to stay in Iowa as a starter.

The Iowa season ends Sept. 7, though I don't know if they have a shot at the playoffs or not. Once their season ends, leaving Shark in Iowa wouldn't do him any good.

Yeah, but bringing him up wont do us any good either.

Meh. It's not like he's going to blow crucial September games for us.

Right. Sending them back down next spring would use an option, but that would be the case anyway if they're added to the 40-man roster in the off-season to protect them from Rule 5.

Right but I think he meant the "clock" which is calendar years from the time added to the 40-man roster and the time before a player needs to clear waivers to be optioned, etc. But you wouldn't really need to option a player in September anyway.

If Gaub and Stevens actually do pan out, I'm gonna stop complaining about the DeRosa trade.

The problem was never dealing DeRosa, but rather replacing him with Miles.

If it makes you feel any better, you could think of Miles as Ronnie Cedeno's replacement, with the Cubs not getting any replacement for DeRosa.

Yeah, it doesn't make me feel any better either.

Then again, you could also consider Jeff Baker as DeRosas replacement, although too little, too late.

So whats the point in not calling up Gaub at this point? theres 2-3 open 40 man spots, and its not like we have anything else to fill them with. I hope they plan on protecting him from the Rule 5, so he'll end up on the 40 man sooner or later, so why not just call him up and have a look at him? we all know Lou loves him some loogies.
