Lets face it, I really dont see much happening in the upcoming offseason, however, after this year, we should have some payroll freed up, and theres a very, very nice free agent class in 2011. The top dog is Albert Pujols, but I really dont see leaving St. Louis, unless the Yankees or Red Sox offer him something disgusting, so as far as the moe realistic options, who would you chose? I think Id have to chose Mauer due to his ability to play catcher and possible 1B.

The youngest players on that list are Mauer, Prince and Reyes. Prince will likely be available and Mauer has a chance to be. Reyes almost certainly won't be.

That said, if all three were available, I'd prefer Reyes. SS is a difficult position to find good talent at and Reyes is really good. Mauer may be wearing down after years of catching. Prince would be nice.

Halladay light years ahead of everyone else on that list. If not him, then Reyes, though I don't think he'll be available. After him, Prince.

I want no part of signing what will be, in May of that year, a 34 year old Halladay to what would be at least a three-year deal, if not longer.,

Joe Mauer.

I'm hoping that will be no need.

So am I, but I am not confident.

At least we're talking about after 2010 rather than 2009, so we have next year to see if Soto can rebound next year.

I answered Reyes, based on the hope Soto does rebound. If not, Mauer (assuming he keeps his production up and stays healthy next year).

Mauer and move him to 1B.

Thats was my thinking. No matter what Lee does, he'll be 35 at that point, and I knwo that if Jim Hendry is still around, he'll be tempted to give him a 5 year 120 million dollar deal, but it will be time for a change.

If the Cubs got Mauer I'd platoon him with Soto at Catcher and 1st base. That way neither gets worn down by playing catcher every day but either can go back there full time if someone gets hurt. All this is predicated on Soto rebounding next season.
