I'm talking about ov=verrated in terms of the way people talk him up... especially ESPN and such. They constantly make him out to be some superstar hitter. It's not just ESPN though.

He's not a great hitter, but he is undervalued

I don't think he's undervalued, he's overpaid, but not undervalued.

ah yes the famous career OPS.

When I evaluate a player, I use more than his age 23-25 OPS, sorry.

i just used OPS because it was easies to post. his overall offensive numbers are pretty accurately displayed there.

and ages 23-25? what about the last 2 seasons where he's failed to break .800?

He hit for a .798 OPS last year. That's plenty good for a great defensive CF. This year, he has suffered from a BABIP 34 points lower than his career average (which I know you love). His BB/K has stayed pretty much the same from the last few seasons.

The White Sox just added a guy who's making 60m over the next 5 years who's been basically Jacque Jones at the plate the last two years. I don't care how good his defense is if he keeps hitting like that there's no way thats gonna be a good move. But if he can get back to hitting the way he did in 06-07, it will end up working out good for the Sox. But right now it's a pretty risky move and Williams usually doesn't do well with the big type moves. When he does is when he buys low on guys. Like adding Jermaine Dye in free agency cheap after he had a few off years, trading for Contreras when the Yankees gave up on him, trading for Thome and getting the Phillies to eat a bunch of his salary after a bad 05, finding Bobby Jenks off waivers and signing AJ Pierzynski when nobody wanted him. Then adding Alexi Ramirez/Taduahito Iguchi cheap when there wasn't alot of interest, and getting Gavin Floyd, Matt Thortnon and Carlos Quentin when their teams gave up on them. When he's done poorly is when he tries to make that big splash. Like trading for David Wells,Todd Ritchie, Nick Swisher and a few others like that. So it's going to be interesting to see how Peavy/Rios work out because their two big long term gambles for the Sox.

I'll say this again... I never said he's a crappy player. I said he's overrated and not the rgeat hitter people make him out to be. A .798 OPS is fine, but it's not great.

Hopefully you actually try and understand what I'm saying this time. I never said Rios is a bad player.

Nice try. You said

undervalued? rios might be the most overrated player in baseball

What I am saying is that he, not only is the most overrated player in baseball, but isn't even really overrated.

by the way, babip is useless if you use it by itself.

his ld% this season is 18.4, which is by far the lowest in his career, and way lower than last season.

guess what? if you aren't hitting the ball hard, you're going to have a low babip.

At 10:06 PM you said the following about Alex Rios:

and usually is a crappy hitter

And then at 10:34 PM you said the following about the above mentioned Rios:

I'll say this again... I never said he's a crappy player.

There seems to have been a disconnect somewhere in between 10:06 PM and 10:34 PM Central. We would like very much if you would expand on this for us.

apparently you don't understand that hitting is only part of a players game. apparently you also missed the 1463 posts in this thread talking about how good his defense is.

i figured you'd be smart enough to comprehend all this. my mistake

Now you're just making useless posts. I think he's overrated and you don't We've established that. You tried to play the "haha, i got you!" game by quoting two seperate posts, when really both posts pretty much said the same thing.

That's rich. Calling my posts useless.

Explain to me how he is overrated. You have told me that he is not a stud hitter, which he's not. And you understand that hitting is not the only part of a player's game. But, you don't get how he is undervalued

Good move by the Sox. He's projected to be about exactly worth his contract to an average team... he's worth significantly more than that to a team in a close pennant race like the Sox.

Good move by the Jays too.

His defense must be incredibly stellar, because he's currently OPSing 110 points lower than Kosuke and they're making similar amounts of money. Or Kosuke is worth a good bit more than he's making.

Projected <> currently OPSing

Oh my god. I've already explained to you why I think he's overrated. Here, let me help you.

I'm talking about overrated in terms of the way people talk him up... especially ESPN and such. They constantly make him out to be some superstar hitter. It's not just ESPN though.

Combine that with his big contract and maybe you can comprehend what I'm saying.

Oh and, nothing to say about Dave Cameron's post?

Oh, and nothing about how Rios' LD% plummeted this season?

I'll go ahead and say that I doubt his LD% fall off by a couple percentage points at the age of 28.

Your turn.

this is an amazing argument about an incredibly mediocre player who is going from one team not in our league/division to another team not in our league/division
