Mark Riggins on the top pitching prospects in the system (ITI premium): http://cubs.scout.com/a.z?s=260&p=11&isFirstMediaIdAudioOrVideo=audio&playlist=http%3A//cubs.scout.com/asxplaylist.aspx%3Fs%3D260%26mediaids%3D704736

  • Cashner is viewed as a starter by the organization.
  • Nice things to say about the 08 draft - Cashner, Carpenter, Jackson, Coleman. Expects Jackson back at AA soon (no mention of disciplinary reasons).
  • Austin Kirk is an extremely smart pitcher, like a college guy. Good breaking ball.
  • Dae-Eun Rhee will be activated in the next week in the AZL but the primary goal is to get him his innings at Instructs.
  • Hopes Larry Suarez opens next year in Peoria.

We are changing up the rotation this week. Mark Riggins is here as well.

Sat: Cabrera

Sun: Archer

Mon: Shafer

Tue: Bristow

Wed: Bibens Dirkx

Thu: Antigua

not sure how long we will go six men though with the amount of pitches Cabby and Archer throw in limited innings are bullpen will be pretty taxed this series, especially if Shafer only goes 2-3 innings again...

Brett Jackson has hit his second homer at Peoria and Antigua allowed a solo shot in the second inning, but through 3, that's all he's given up and he has 5 K's......
Posted
Antigua wound up with a line of 4.2 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, and 6 K's. He got the first 2 in the 5th, then walked a pair, was lifted and Beliveau allowed both to score. He's definitely becoming someone to really keep an eye on. I'm starting to think he could be a borderline top 10 guy for us next year and considering the agressive promotions recently, maybe even start off at Daytona possibly?

Glad to see Cabrera in the rotation.

Not a bad outing for Antigua.

Hernandez looking good with 5 shutout so far in Boise. I'm sure he'll once again tire in the 6th and end up with an average outing.

Jackson is off to a good start at Peoria, although his K-rate is already pushing 25%. 7/8 in stolen bases as a pro so far too, that's a nice plus.

Would a Mike Cameron-like career be too much to ask from Jackson? I'm not expecting him to be a .300 hitter, but if he can show off decent power, decent walk rates, and good enough defense, I can live with the strikeouts.

Sergio Burruel caught today so MiLB.com (unsurprisingly) ended up being wrong on him being an outfielder.

Michael Brenly hit in jaw with pitch:

Peoria’s starting catcher Michael Brenly departed in the fifth after getting beaned with a fastball from Wisconsin pitcher Liam Ohlmann. Brenly staggered out of the batter’s box and went to all fours on the grass in foul territory. Trainer Kelly Vanhove and manager Marty Pevey tended to Brenly, who left the field under his own power although escorted by Vanhove. Brenly, who missed the first week of the season after suffering a concussion in spring training, was in the dugout in the later innings. Pevey said he had some swelling in the jaw and will likely take Saturday off as a precaution.

- Chris Robinson is batting .417 in his last 10 games.

- John Gaub has not given up an earned run in his last 10 games.

- Kyler Burke had 4 singles today and is batting .375 over his last 10 games (he had gone 0-for-12 before today's hits).

- Sergio Burruel with 2 hits today and he picked a guy off 1B. (He also had a passed ball.)

- Wilson Contreras with 3 errors today at 3B (he's supposed to be a catcher).

If you are glad to see Cabrera in the rotation its only cause you've never seen him pitch in person...he fits in best following Archer for 2-3 innings.

Sure, Antigua was great. His changeup is probably the best on the team (Shafer has a plus change as well). Located the fastball well until the 5th. Slider was better than on Sunday. He got squeezed BIG time by the home plate ump in the fifth with 2 straight walks with two down. Threw a 2-2 slider for strike three twice in a row but both were called balls for the first walk. 2nd walk put him over 75 pitches so he was lifted and Beliveau got hit hard on the next two batters with both runners scoring charged to Antigua.

If I had to rank our starters now id put him 2nd behind Bibens-Dirkx and just ahead of Archer and Bristow.

How would you judge Antigua's fastball, and the velocity of some of these guys?

My guess, (please correct as appropriate):

Cabrera > Archer > Bristow > Antigua, Beliveau >> Bibens-Dirkx, Shafer

My guess is that Huseby and Buchter would both be in the Antigua area, a shafe faster than Biben-Dirkx and Shafer, but not as fast as Archer or probably even Bristow?

I'm also guessing that perhaps many of these are really bunched; that Cabrera is noticably faster, and on occassion Archer, but that most of the rest are probably all in the usual 86-92 mph range most of the time?

Obviously I'm only asking about pure velocity, I realize that Cabrera while faster is straight and wild and thus much more hittable, and that Bibens and Antigua thus far seem to be more effective because of location and/or movement.

Des Moines Register[/url]"]Train trouble: Iowa Cubs outfielder and major league veteran So Taguchi had an interesting experience in downtown Des Moines Thursday night.

Taguchi was making the short walk from Principal Park to his downtown apartment after a game with Reno when he came upon a slow-moving train at Second and Vine. Taguchi's apartment is on the north side of the tracks.

Taguchi waited more than 30 minutes for the train to pass.

"I was maybe 100 feet from (his apartment)," Taguchi said.

In between train cars, Taguchi waved to his son, who was watching him from their apartment.

Taguchi said several people climbed onto the train when it stopped at one point.

"One guy dropped his pants," Taguchi.
