According to Peter Gammons (I know, I know), the Red Sox had an offer on the table from the Indians that was Victor Martinez for Clay Buccholtz straight up. They turned it down and then traded for LaRoche.

I'd have made that trade in 2 seconds flat.

There's no way I can believe that. If you sent me an audio recording of the phone call between both team's GMs where the trade was proposed, and the video came with a certificate of authenticity signed by both guys, I still cannot believe that.

Things I didn't know before today: Victor Martinez turns 31 this offseason.

I'm not too surprised. Martinez isn't great for a 1B, and if that's where he's headed then it's not a good idea to give up a premium arm like Buccholz when you can give up nothing and get the same thing from LaRoche/Lowell.

Wow. For some reason I thought he was like 25.

man i thought he was 27. that does change things. and you're right, the difference between laroche and martinez at 1b isn't large enough to justify giving up buchholz. i'd rather take a dump in a bag and exchange that for laroche.

seems like another smart decision by the red sox front office. victor martinez is somewhat overrated, especially as a first baseman. his value comes from catching.

an .850 OPS first baseman really is not that hard to find.

I agree with TF here and agree that BoSox should have turned down that offer. For as much crap that BBTN spews on and on about Boston's "depth" at pitching, they've only got two effective starters that are healthy.

Beckett----3.42/1.14

Lester-----3.87/1.29

Wakefield-4.31/1.38*

Dice-K----8.23/2.20*

Penny----5.02/1.50

Smoltz----6.31/1.44

*both on DL.

On the surface Boston should have made the trade, but looking a bit deeper Boston should not make the Buchholz/Martinez deal, because the Red Sox need Buchholz more then they need Martinez. So Boston was right not to make this trade.
