it'd be really nice if joel pineiro remembers that he's joel pineiro. this would also be a nice time for ryan franklin to remember that he's ryan franklin.

Ryan Franklin....................................on steroids.

There could well be something up with some of these guys, if not roids, then HGH. Im not going to question guys like Wainwright and Carpenter, but can even Dave Duncan take guys like Franklin and Piniero who have made a career out of mediocrity and make stars out of them?

Only the Nats, but still - if Soriano actually plans on waking up and being competent again, I really like the way the second half is shaping up.

Maybe after half a season of suckage comes half a season of awesomeness

Half a season plus a month.

If Fontenot, Soriano, and Fukudome can do what they did this weekend against major league pitching, we could be on.

Nationals DFA Julian Tavarez

By Drew Silva [July 19 at 5:16pm CST]

MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports the Nationals have designated right-hander Julian Tavarez for assignment.

Tavarez, a true journeyman at this point in his career, had a 4.89 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP in 35 innings with the Nats. He's 35, but a club desperate for bullpen depth might decide to give him a shot. Either that, or he'll end up back at Washington's Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse.

Looks like we may have put the nail in Julian Tavarezes coffin.

Hart's sporting a 5/15 K/BB ratio for the season.

Hopefully, he's done in the rotation. With the off day Thursday, the Cubs can skip Hart next time through the rotation. With any luck, Dempster will be ready to go the next time the Cubs need a 5th starter on July 28th. If not, I'd probably rather have Szamardzija start anyway.

If Lou is not going to use Szmardzija in any meaningful situations out of the bullpen then they would be just as well letting him start. He certainly looked better in his 3 innings today then Hart. Once Dempster is back they should send Szmardzija back to AAA as a starter to work on improving and just let Hart be the mop up long reliever. The only reason it makes sense for Szmardzija to be up here is either to start or if he is going to have a key role in the bullpen and be effective like he was late last season. To let him languish out there with sporadic work in blowout games doesn't make much sense.

Stevens in to pitch for the CUBS

Who is Stevens, and when did he come up? I haven't been able to watch any games the past week.

“Why did I sign with the Nationals?” Tavarez said told a group of reporters. “When you go to a club at 4 in the morning, and you’re just waiting, waiting, a 600-pounder looks like J. Lo. And to me this is Jennifer Lopez right here. It’s 4 in the morning. Too much to drink. So, Nationals: Jennifer Lopez to me.”

And the 600-pounder just dumped you.
