I could not find the complete text of Maddux's speech as #31 was retired in Atlanta yesterday, but in what I did read, I could see no mention of 'how great the fans in Atlanta' were or 'what a great place Atlanta is' in which to play. Anybody else see/hear him mention those topics or did he reserve those comments for the years he spent at Wrigley?

a quick check of the numbers shows that the attendance in 10 of his 11 years in atlanta were higher than the highest season his first go round with the cubs.

I still don't think the Cubs should have retired his number. I love Maddux but if I weren't a Cub fan I would think of him as a Brave first and foremost. In fact I still do. Although I didn't see him pitch for the Cubs the first go round because I was too young, so maybe my opinion would be otherwise if I had.

I'm not sure it would have been retired just for Maddux, if he weren't sharing that honor with Jenkins. But it would have probably been seen as slighting Greg if it were retired for Jenkins but not him. He was better known as a Brave, but he certainly had several good years with the Cubs. No reason a player can't deserve to have his number retired by more than one team.

wow. that speech was incredible.

"i'd like to thank all the players for coming out, too. that's pretty special."

i was hoping he'd talk about urinating on rookies legs in the showers after games or something. ah well

Maddux had no reason to be retired by the cubs.

It's not like despite missing his peak he like he's 2nd in wins for the cubs since the dead ball era. Oh, and he won a cy young with the club.
