Maybe Hart will follow in the path of Randy Wells as a starter. That would be asking for a lot considering how horrible Hart was last year, but you never know. I say give him a few starts, and if its disasterous and Dempster is still hurt then let Marshall go back to starting. I don't really want Fossum on this team though. When is Waddell supposed to be back?

If you have medical findings that show a fractured toe and healing time for the toe will be well over 15 days, what is the point of DL'ing Dempster retroactive to the date he last pitched?

Retroactive to last game played is standard operating procedure. Why make the point that it won't be retroactive?

I would prefer Samardzija starting to Hart.

Why would you push Z up a start, that's dumb.

Exactly thats my thing, unless its really about the DH on Sunday and them not wanting to start Shark twice, which makes no sense.

I bet Shark will move into the rotation because Lou like Marshall out of the pen plus we need a LHP there.

If that was the case then why wouldnt they start Shark tomorrow?

We don't really need a lefty in there and it's a bad decision to have Marshall be that lefty when he is a decent starter. Especially with an injured Dempster.

I'm guessing it was probably Z that made the offer in the first place, but the Cubs should have had the good sense to decline.

I have to imagine they will consider going back to 12 pitchers very soon.

Only 6 games before the ASB. Maybe, maybe not. If Demps needs more than the retroactive 15 day stint, then we may need to do something.

I suspect he's thinking of the likelihood of the bullpen getting taxed the next couple of days. With Z pitching on short rest tonight and Hart pitching tomorrow they'll be lucky to average 5 innings per starter.

So put Marshall in the rotation

call up Fossum as a loogy

put Hart at the end of the pen in Pattons old spot, even though Id prefer Stevens

Send down Hoffpauir.

Again, Marshall isn't ready to start since he pitched last night. That may be a longer-term solution, but not for the next couple of days.

I meant long term, post ASB if Demp needs significant time off, which it seems like he might. Marshall deserves that rotation spot, and with Guz back, we already have a deep enough pen. Hoff likely goes down, and after Heilman, Guz, Marmol, and Gregg, make up the other 3 between Hart/Shark/Stevens/Fossum/whoever. Maybe grab Matt Herges.

Well Samardzija has been pretty bad out of the pen and pretty good as a starter in Iowa so he should at least get a shot. On the other side of the coin, Marshall's been better out of the pen than in the rotation.

I see your point, but a fractured big toe is going to take well over 15 days to heal. So overall the decision of whether or not to make the DL stint retroactive is meaningless.

Whoever starts tonight will also start again on Sunday against the Cards. This may be another reason Z starts tonight.

Precisely. Better to give Zambrano two starts leading up to the ASB, even if one is on short rest, than a fill-in guy.

It'll be cake to sort things out in the rotation after the ASB, when everyone (except perhaps Lilly) has had 3 days off.

Starting Z to get him another start before the break makes sense. I'd be shocking if Lou didn't put an 80-90 pitch count limit on him tonight. Have Shark ready to pitch 3 innings tonight and then you have Marshall who can pick up the slack tomorrow. Thursday is an off day and then it's business as usual. I'm guessing it's not Hart because the process of transportation back to Chicago and then getting into the right frame of mind are viewed as much more damaging than what they decided to do. That said, if Z hurts himself tonight or Sunday they've really screwed themselves. If I'm Hendry I have Pedro's agent on speed dial in case Dempster is goign to be out a month or more.

This seems to have happened so suddenly, there probably wasn't time to get ANY pitcher (Hart or otherwise) up in time to start the game tonight.

omg...

Dempster said he caught his foot on the dugout railing while jumping out of the dugout running onto the field after Sunday's win over the Brewers. He expects to miss his final two starts before the All-Star break and perhaps one more after the break. But manager Lou Piniella says he could miss three to four weeks, at least.

"It's a weird thing," Dempster said.

He said it's a non-displaced fracture and he would likely lose his toe nail.

That's so ridiculous. I wonder if the Cubs would toy with the idea of bring of Jay Jackson from Tennessee if Demps is going to be out a while. He's been outstanding in AA.
