The Pirates took Tony Sanchez and it was labeled as a money saving pick. And, it was, but it wasn't about being cheap. It was about allocation of funds.

The general thinking is that a #4 pick would command about $4.5 mil. The Pirates brain trust came to the conclusion that no one who'd be left @ #4 would be worth the money. Sp, they agreed ahead of time w/ Tony Sanchez. That left $2 mil.

Here's what they hope to do with that money:

The general thinking is, more or less, these 2 guys and Sanchez will help the major league club more than some guy better than Sanchez and two guys who would take slot money at those rounds.

It's going to be interesting to see if it works.

They tried the same basic strategy last year - they passed on signing Scheppers and used the money to sign Quenton Miller and Robbie Grossman (also high school stars committed to universities.)

There were others who signed who's names I can't remember, and others who didn't.

There's still a long way to go, but at least it's looking a bit brighter these days.

This was probably a good year to use that strategy, If you couldn't get one of the first two guys you might as well save some money.

if there was nobody at #4 who was worth slot, then they did the right thing. i mentioned in the draft thread when people goofed on the pirates' pick that they spent a lot on the draft last year, and were probably saving money to spend either later in the draft or on some latin american bonuses.

i like the people running the pirates right now, it seems like they know what they have to do as a small market franchise.

The Pirates did a fantastic job in the draft (as will the A's if they sign everyone in the top 10 rounds - which they normally do).

There are some really head-scratching comments in the thread on that page.

I've watched the State College Spikes play a few times this season. They have a bunch of the Pirates '09 picks on the team (Victor Black, Brock Holt, Evan Chambers, etc). They've all shown potential, though the numbers don't look very good.

I've learned never to read comments on a web page with rare exceptions (Bruce Miles articles, BA & BP).

I has partial season tickets to the Spikes first season, and 3 or 4 of the guys in that first draft class have already logged MLB playing time (Brendan Ryan, PJ Walters, Jason Motte....)

Colton Cain got $1.125 million and Zack Von Rosenberg for $1.2 million.
