let's face it, guzman was gonna get hurt at some point regardless of whether he pitched yesterday. he's the rich harden of the bullpen.

It would be nice if the Cubs took more precaution with Guzman and Harden, though.

How could they take more precautions with Harden?

When they acquired him they talked about skipping starts and giving him extra time between outings while holding down his pitch count. Yet at the outset of this year they tried none of that, having him go every 5th day and steadily increasing his pitch count in the starts leading up to his injury.

They shouldn't be sending Guzman out for multiple inning outings or too many back to back games. They should let Harden have 5-6 days between starts and maybe skip one rotation when there are off days to mix-in, and be ready to go to the bullpen once he gets into the mid-80's. All it takes is one extended at-bat to quickly push that to the mid-90's and 100+, which he can't handle.

It just seems like he hasn't really pitched all that much to begin with. And then the injury he had wasn't even an arm injury anyway.

He made every start until he got hurt. It seems like he hasn't pitched much because he missed nearly a month on the DL. And while it wasn't an arm injury, it was clearly related to throwing, which has caused him all sorts of injuries in his career.

I guess if you are a starting pitcher and throwing causes problems, that's not a good thing.

Guz is going to start a rehab stint for Peoria Thurs, and then move to Iowa for a couple games, before returning to the Cubs. Sounds like he could be back by next weekend at the latest.
