Apparently the Reds were the 2nd highest bidder for DeRo, and are desperatley trying to find a big bat as they see themselves as buyers right now. If they could get an impact bat, they could become a team to really watch with that starting staff.

yep...but it looks like they are not going to be able to swing holliday...which sucks because the cardinals probably will...

are PTBNL's assigned by PAs/ABs/games played like FA contracts, or can they be chosen based on performance? he certainly will get plenty of playing time in STL.

Most of the time PTBNL's have nothing to do with how the major league player performs after the trade. Sometimes the PTBNL is already known at time of trade but simply can't be traded yet for some reason or another, and at other times the PTBNL is chosen from a list that was decided on at the time of trade.

It's rare to have a situation like the Cubs have with Rich Hill where the player received is tied to how well he pitches. It's usually only done with players like Hill who are talented but have fallen on very hard times.

I don't think DeRosa's AB's or his performance with the Cardinals will have anything to do with what quality of PTBNL the Indians get back.

Yes. We haven't received anybody in that deal yet. The deal will have to be finished with either a player or cash in the next little over a month (August 2nd). Since Hill has already made 8 starts for the Orioles, my guess is that the Cubs will get their pick of the better of the two lists of players.

i knew there was a reason i was rooting on OPR this season...hopefully it is a helpful player in more than one avenue

I know people like to brag up DeRo and stuff, but why has nothing been said that hes been horrible vs RH pitching this year? Hes hitting .251 with a .728 OPS against RH pitchers. The DeRo hype has gotten to really ridiculous levels.

DeRo is overhyped because he was one of the few players on the Cubs who understood the importance of the team to its fans. And he understood that being on the Cubs had a much more special meaning than being on a team like, say, the Mariners. Combine that with above average play, great versatility, a care-free sense of humor, and taking accountability for himself and his actions when he played poorly... I mean he was just a class act. I think that plays into his hype much more than his ability.

i agree with this. how many of you here as kids hated a player because of something he did during a game or off the field even though he was one of if not the big stars of the team? liking someone, or making someone greater than their abilities is affected far more by their reactions off the field than their actual play.

the perfect scenario i believe is playing out this season. speaking for myself only, who would i rather have, a player that rakes (or was signed to rake) but was a known headcase and a clubhouse distraction or a player that was above-to-average on the field but made the team better in terms of leadership ability, who would you have?

i personally would go with the team guy over the headcase in any scenario because i don't think one guy makes a baseball team (basketball and hockey are different stories) but one guy can break one. if forced to choose i'd rather have the guy who tears the cover off the ball when winning, because normally headcases aren't as big of a deal when the team is winning.

hendry's main problem wasn't that he traded derosa whom i admit had me as a fan after the tampa series last year, but the guy who replaced him is that much worse than derosa. if hendry replaced him with a sanchez or a cabrera or frankly anyone who could play the middle infield and not suck as badly as miles, most of the fans reaction would be around the lines of mark derosa was a nice cubs player, i'm glad we had him but the guy we replaced him with is that much better.

Sounds like an evil plot by DeRosa to help the Cubs catch up to the Cardinals.

DeRosa for greatest Cub player of all time. Who's with me?

Nice Hulu reference, BBB.

DeRosa out 3-4 games with a wrist injury.

The Cardinals' Mark DeRosa has a strained tendon in his left wrist and expects to miss three or four games.

St. Louis also said third baseman Troy Glaus will report to its spring training complex to continue therapy in an often troubled rehab from right shoulder surgery in January. The 32-year-old could begin a rehab assignment in a few weeks.

Bad news is that Cub killer extraordinaire Brian Barden is coming back up as part of the transaction.

He was already up after sending Tyler Greene down. Nick Stavinoah is being called up for DeRo

Sounding really bad...

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Mark DeRosa is "suffering from a torn tendon sheath that casts doubt on his return" following the All-Star break.

More deception and shadiness from the Cardinals' medical staff. General manager John Mozeliak told reporters Tuesday afternoon that DeRosa's placement on the disabled list was a "precautionary move," but now it's not clear if he'll be able to return before the end of July. "I don’t know all the jargon. But there is definitely something wrong with it," DeRosa said Tuesday. "There is definitely a partial tear of the sheath. It’s one of those things where you hope time allows it to heal itself."
