The source of this is BleedCubbieBlue's insider that Al talks about occasionally "Deep Goat". So this is a take it for what it's worth thing because I have no idea how valid the insider is, but here is what Al posted after on his site the game today. It's barely enough to make a new thread, but I thought it would be interesting to at least speculate.,,

Instead of a simple recounting of today's game, I'm going to start this recap with some information from Deep Goat.

Word is that there may be some "changes" as soon as tomorrow. I don't know the nature of the "changes" -- could be anything from trades to minor league/major league roster moves to changes in the coaching staff (if it were up to my friend Phil, he'd fire Gerald Perry, but I don't think that's going to happen; he said "Book it", but remember he also said "Book it" to Alfonso Soriano starting at 2B today and that didn't happen).

Speculate away; I only have the word that "changes" are coming.

Firing someone or some people on the coaching staff?

A trade for a 3B?

Just some stupid call up of another useless AAA player?

We'll see.

The biggest coaching change I could see happening would probably be to fire Perry (don't think he deserves it, but he's probably the guy that's the highest up in the coaching ranks that has a chance to get fired). Lou just go his extension and I don't see a move as drastic as firing him as a possibility. Larry is fine, he is a top 3 pitching coach and the rotation has been really good, the bullpen has been real bad but I think that's more of the talent we got down there than it is anything Larry can change/has changed. Trammel isn't going anywhere. Maybe a guy like Sinatro or Quade gets bounced just for the sake of making a move. I don't see any sort of major trade happening. Is there a chance Ryno might get promoted to some sort of bench role?

I certainly hope this is true. They are wasting some very good pitching.

Short of a trade, I'd place Soriano at 2B, bring Fox back (release Miles) and platoon him in LF with Hoff. Start Fontenot at 3B until Ramirez gets back and in the mean time try and convince the Nats they don't need Dunn. I'd also release Patton back to whomever we drafted him from via Rule 5 and bring Scales back.

This plan really isn't that far fetched.

I know there was that speculation of moving Soriano back to 2B, but was it just talk? Or have they at least been hitting him grounders there and working him out? I would think with a move like that, they would be working him out there for a week or so before making a decision about actually implementing it in a game.

My guess would be that the Cubs have sent Carlos Marmol to Iowa to work on his control. According to Arizona Phil, he still has one option remaining, but would need to clear revocable waivers first (Neal Cotts did it last month).

Neal Cotts, Mike Fontenot, Carlos Marmol, Sean Marshall, and Ryan Theriot must clear Optional Assignment Waivers before they can be optioned to the minors. Also, Jose Ascanio would have to clear Optional Assugnment Waivers before he can be optioned to the minors beginning on July 13th. Optional Assignment Waivers are revocable and can be withdrawn if a claim is made, but if a player is claimed off Optional Waivers and the waiver request is subsequently withdrawn, the player cannot be placed on Optional Assignment Waivers again for at least 30 days, and if a player is placed on Optional Waivers a second time that season and the player is claimed by another club, the waivers become irrevocable and the request cannot be withdrawn.

I could also see the Cubs returning (or trading for & sending down) David Patton.

RHP David Patton is a 2009 Rule 5 Player (he was selected in the Major League Phase of the December 2008 Rule 5 Draft), so if the Cubs decide they cannot keep him on their Active List (25-man roster) and/or on their 15-day or 60-day DL for the entire 2009 season, he must be placed on Outright Waivers, and if he isn't claimed, he then must be offered back to the Colorado Rockies. (Patton was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds from the Rockies and then was traded by the Reds to the Cubs). If the Rockies reclaim Patton (and most clubs do take their Rule 5 guys back if they are given the chance), he will be automatically outrighted to the Rockies AAA Colorado Springs affiliate (the AAA club from which he was drafted) and the Cubs get $25,000 (half the Rule 5 Draft price) from the Rockies. But if the Rockies choose not to take him back, Patton remains property of the Cubs and he can be sent to the minors.

Some players at Iowa who deserve a callup include Kevin Hart (amazing over the last month & did not pitch in today's double header), Blake Parker, Jake Fox, Matt Camp, Bobby Scales, J.R. Mathes, Jeff Stevens, and Neal Cotts. John Gaub at Tennessee could also get a look soon.

I don't see anyone who will be our savior in the hitting department - we'd need a trade for that. I'll trade Jim Hendry's off-season for just about any other GM's (and I'm a Hendry fan). P.S. Jose Ceda hasn't pitched yet this year. Maybe there was an understanding that Ceda was hurt when we traded him (it seemed like we got screwed on that deal at the time).

Something needs to change, and fast. I don't think Gerald Perry is going to be around much longer.

If it were up to me, Hendry would be long gone, too, but I'm not holding my breath.

Welcome to the big leagues, Josh Vitters!

Not gonna happen, but honestly wouldn't be surprised if they pulled something ludicrous like that. After all, to steal a phrase from Super Troopers, desperation is a stinky cologne

Considering the way the offense has been playing, this plan is a whole lot less offensive than I'd have thought a few weeks ago.

Hopefully a trade but I doubt it. We just need a new player or two, and not from our farm system. Obviously team chemistry is off with the current way the team is setup.

I'd be all for moving Soriano to 2B if it meant putting someone like Fox into the lineup if it weren't for the fact that Soriano can't field a slow roller in the OF. If he can't even field a ball cleanly when it's at a pleasant strolling pace, then I'd hate to see how he would handle scorchers hit to him at 2B now that he's been removed from the position for 3 years. If he were a decent fielder I'd put up with Fox's D in LF, but Soriano at 2B would be a train wreck at this point

firing gerald perry would be a terrible idea. it's not his fault that everyone is ailing.

if we get hawpe...wow

to think we could have started this season off with the same outfield as last season, possibly picked up a hudson or lopez, and still be in position to land the very player we are rumored to be going after...

curious

Pedro Martinez signed?

Trade for Brad Hawpe? (http://cubsrumorsandnews.blogspot.com/)

We're stuck with Bradley. I don't see Hendry trading for a RF and I don't see another team being interested in Bradley especially with how he's been so far this season.

wait, isn't hawpe not so hot against lefties?

they could have a platoon...

We probably could have gotten Abreu or Dunn and kept DeRosa and we wouldnt be in this pickel

I would by no means by surprised to see Soto sent to Iowa as soon as tomorrow. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that with 2 on and no outs, down by 2 in the 9th that Lou would PH Andres Blanco for him.
