The combination of not having Ramirez and a *very* powerful lefty bat in Edmonds has hurt this team. 19 HR in 250 AB with a .937 OPS is something this team would love to have right now. Edmonds went yard every 13 or so AB.

You know who hit: 320/.397/.594/.991 in 147 at bats (or with a homerun once every 18 at bats)? You know what he followed that up with:

.204/.260/.339/.599 (with a homerun every 34 at bats).

Yeah, we didn't need to watch that happen again with a 2nd retread Cardinal player. I appreciate what Edmonds did last yr, but to hope/expect him to do it again would have been foolish.

As foolish as signing a guy who has one season of 500+ AB's his entire career and who was a DH at a tee-ball park for $30 million?

No, as foolish as to give a utility player who have power, no speed, very little "actual" versatitily on the field, and barely league average hitting ability a 2 yr $5million contract. At least with Bradley it wasn't production that was being question it was his health.

Speaking of that Miles comes back tonight, doesn't he?

Ugh.

And to think I was actually having a pretty good day until I got this tidbit. Yikes.

0-5 3k last night in iowa, so he appears to be right back in game shape

Can we delay him based on that sort of thing? Just DL him indefinitely please

His one cheek there looks like it's trying to hatch fish eggs or something. Good crikey.

Interesting stats--- I'm really surprised that the overall averages are so similar to what they were when Ramirez was playing. Derrek Lee getting back on track has come at the right time, and I would suggest that probably has something to do with it.

Fred I'm not fully familiar with the stats around clutch, and don't know what a good ratio for batters driven in vs (batters driven in + left on base) is. Was Ramirez off the charts good before getting injured? Are the rest of the Cubs performing lower than normal this year?

The Cubs have been terrible recently at hitting with runners on/in scoring position.

The Cubs are 28th in baseball in BA, R and OPS with RISP. Last year we were 4th in all 3 of those categories I think. It's a major major problem and a huge reason why our offense is nowhere near as good as last years.

I was talking specifically for the BDI and LOB stats Fred has.

The Cubs rank low in general. It's not just a RISP situation. It makes sense that with so few quality hitters, that when those guys do get on, and in scoring position, the only remaining hitters available to hit in those situations are the lessers hitters, who would be expected to put up worse numbers. It's not a RISP thing, it's a hitting thing, in general. They have too many weak spots and no high performers.

And yet we are only 2.5 games out. Starting pitching has been carrying us.

BTW - Do you guys think that Lilly has been Hendry's best FA signing?

Its right up there with the DeRosa signing no doubt. Johnson and Edmonds were decent ones as well. And I really think Soriano was the right guy to bring here, but the contract isn't good at all.

Has there ever been a serious explanation of his facial deformities? That [expletive] can't be healthy.

BDI is simply RBI - HR, LOB are taken right from the daily box score. If a batter gets on base but doesn't drive in the runner(s) ahead of him, he's not charged with a LOB.

Currently the CUBS are sitting at .167 compared to .197, .189, .200, and .184 in the last 4 seasons. I consider anything above .2 to be good. Ramirez' .293 is monster.

I've never been able to quantify what league average is because I've never seen LOB totals posted anywhere, and I'll be damned if I'm going to keep them for the whole league.
