Oh man, I remember Sosa.

I'm actually kinda surprised that guys like him and Bonds haven't been given another chance by anyone. There are alot of really bad teams out there... and you'd think they would AT LEAST make decent bench bats.

I'm really curious to see what his HOF chances look like. He's a really obvious candidate for steroid use, but considering no one's proven he has used yet, I'm unsure what his odds are to get into the Hall any time soon.

He's guilty until proven innocent because of an irresponsible media and irresponsible fans. It's a shame that so many idiots speak so loudly as to alter public perception with no proof to back their claims up.

Yeah, his name always comes up along with McGuire, Bonds and Clemens when the talking heads discuss "known" steroid users, so unfortunately perception is reality and he will most likely get the same treatment as those guys when his time comes for election.

come on guys, sammy took steroids.

Probably, but considering all of the high profile steroid busts/allegations there have been in recent years and that Sammy's name has never come up, he's in much better shape than guys like A-Rod and Bonds.

Either he's been lucky, he's a lot smarter than most of us thought, or he's been clean. I think the first two are much more likely than the last one, but you never know.

I'm willing to let somebody prove that to me. Nobody has managed it yet, though. All I ever see is anecdotal evidence... I could use anecdotal evidence to "prove" any player ever used steroids.

Nobody can prove they didn't use steroids... so operating without the basic assumption of innocence is absurd. The only logical thing you can do is wait for some sort of hard evidence.

Honestly I think that steroid use should have no effect on hall of fame induction. This is because there's no way of knowing for sure who has used them and who hasn't. With that logic, you're going to let tons of people into the hall who used them and never got caught. Then at the same time, you're going to deny people with better numbers just because they got caught. Doesn't seem fair, if they both used steroids.

The only thing you can do is induct people based on their performance, and if they cheated to perform, then that's just the way it is.

Bad teams would rather invest playing time on a prospect that makes $400k than spend $10 million on a stopgap 42 year old player or however old he is. Especially in this economy. That's why players like Sosa, Bonds, Edmonds, etc. have had trouble getting jobs in the last 2 years, although in Bonds' case there were other reasons as well.

This thread has been everything I've hoped for. I really hope by time I wake up tomorrow we can get this to 3 pages or so. I hope Cynosure posts a lot more too.

You don't want that... I'm a problem.

Numerous studies have shown that corked bats generally don't improve hitting, especially in regards to power. At the most it's going to increase the speed of the swing, but it still ultimately comes down to the hitter's eye and timing so that's arguably a wash.

Besides, he got caught, he served his time. Done and done, plus it's unlikely he was using them before the downward slide after the shattered helmet.
