Infielder Ryan Freel will be the latest Cub to go on the disabled list on Thursday after pulling his left hamstring during Wednesday's game.

Bobby Scales, who was sent down to Triple-A Iowa before the game, along with left-hander Neal Cotts, will be called back up on Friday.

"Scales isn't too far," Piniella said. "He can catch a taxi back from the airport."

I definitely prefer Scales, whose had respectable major league numbers and solid minor league numbers over Blanco whose been mediocre at best in the minors and piss poor in his previous major league stints if I have to pick 1 as a starter.

Even though he hasn't been gone long, it's nice to see Scales back.

Yes, he did everything the Cubs could have asked him to do. I'm sure the downturn is inevitable, but he deserved to stay up.

I think the biggest reason he was sent down was that he had the flu and was just taking up a bench spot.

But yes, he's been more than anyone could have hoped for to this point and I think he deserves to continue getting some opportunities. He certainly should play a lot until we make a trade for a third baseman (if we do).

Did Andres Blanco kick your dog or something? We get it. You don't like Andres Blanco. The horse is dead already

I've seen worse than Andres Blanco. He's generally a bad hitter, but was OPSing .800 in 153 ABs this year. He also has a career 5.8 UZR in the majors in 386 innings.

As long as he's just filler and not part of a longterm plan, I don't really have a problem with him.

Precisely. He's only here because of injuries to the starters, he's gone when they come back. The guy was swinging the bat well in the minors, he got called up. Ooooohhhhhh travesty!!! Hendry should commit hari cari for this, the worst of all his crimes against humanity!!!

The problem people have had with past bad middle infielders (Neifi, Macias, etc) is that they'd start consistently and hit toward the top of the order often. Blanco is very unlikely to do the former a lot and probably will never do the latter, so I don't think he'll be hated.

Neifi could have been a decent part of the team if he would have been used correctly.

That's a bold statement, sir :)

Haha, I knew somebody would jump on that sentence. :)

It's true, though. He's a pretty good fielder (career 13.2 UZR at 2B and 8.8 UZR at SS) and he never hit much at all, but would have been decent enough as a pinch hitter.

The problem was he got 503 ABs in the top two spots in the order in 2005 and 98 there in 2006.

And given completely irrational contracts.

Isn't there some sort of rule that a player has to be in the minors for 10 days before being called back up?

Under normal circumstances, yes. With Freel going on the DL, though, that allowed Scales to be recalled.

I was not aware of that exception. Thanks.

I gotta give credit to NCCubFan for reminding me. I had forgotten until he mentioned it in another thread.

Hendry has made his share of bad moves. Bringing up Blanco when they had nobody else able to back up Theriot isn't one of them. Not even close.

Don't let common sense get in the way of a silly grudge.

Silly me; I should know better than that. :D

the entire Freel deal was just a deal to say he made a deal.

I'd take Ryan Freel 10 times out of 10 over Gathright.

i wouldnt have signed Gathright in the first place
