I don't know guys, I think it's a big deal. Hard to maintain an all-star level of play in hockey if your shoulder doesn't recover to full strength. This all depends on how serious it really is. Maybe Detroit knew something, too.

they did

Whether Detroit knew anything is irrelevant because the Hawks are saying they knew about it.

The problem is that nobody else did.

Oh, fantastic! :banghead:

"The NHL is looking to put a damper on these 10-plus-year contracts with throwaway years tacked on at the end," a league executive told the paper. "They are building a strong case against Chicago to make an example of them. This issue won't just go away. Lots of other GMs are supporting the league here."

I don't know, this doesn't seem so much the Hawks' fault. I don't know the specifics, but it sounds as if they are getting toward the very boundaries of the rules, and the NHL and other teams don't like it.

It's a shady contract. But it's probably only a problem if they actually discussed the retirement issue, which I would hope they wouldn't be stupid enough to do.

Does anyone know the verbage of the CBA? I feel like we just are taking advantage of the same loophole that other teams have taken advantage of. No one seemed to get mad when Det did it?

Just, you know, 12 Years

I don't get that.

It's just unseemly. What is the attraction of giving these guys such long deals, anyway? I know Hossa wasn't the first.

Just seems extreme, out of hand.

I just read an article that says the league might fine the Hawks $5million and some draft picks if they discussed retirement. If they did, then they're just stupid. But I don't see how they go into a 12 year deal on a 30 year old player thinking the deal will last the full length.

It's a cap dodge. The cap hit isn't what you pay the player each year, it's the average of the total dollars and the years. So they basically gave him an 8-year, $64 million deal (or thereabouts), and then added on four years of really low pay to lower the average and give him a $5.2 million/year cap hit.

i don't see how it can be viewed as unreasonable to think that a player in the national hockey league can play until he's 42.

i'm no lawyer, but it doesn't seem like the league's case would stand up in court. the league seems angry and understandably so, but if retirement wasn't discussed, i don't see how the blackhawks could be punished for anything.

but then again it's unsettling to think that maybe tallon's firing wasn't just over the rfa's.

Training camp is 11 days away, first preseason game is 17 days away and opening night is one month from today. The Hawks have stepped up their marketing efforts, sending Toews to Wrigley yesterday. And I have it on good authority that SI was intown interviewing Toews and other Hawks personel, and they are going to pick Chicago to win the Stanley Cup in the NHL preview issue.

As disappointing as this baseball season has been, it's nice to have legit hope for both the Bears and Blackhawks, the only other two pro sports teams I really give a crap about.

Yes. Because of Bears & Blackhawks hope, I've almost successfully convinced myself that the baseball season is already over.

Is your source Peter King?

No.

If the league is really going to make an example of the Hawks for a 12 year contract, then they'd better make an example of the Canucks too:

Thank you. I saw that headline yesterday and thought the exact same thing. Sure, he's going to play (read: choke in the playoffs) for another 12 years.

Cannot wait to put this terrible baseball season behind us and get the Hawks started over in Finland.

SI is going to be wrong. There's too much weird stuff going on this offseason for the Hawks to even repeat last year. This is very much like the Bulls a few years ago. They won't completely go in the tank because they have some superstars like Toews, but I'm not expecting the Finals this season.

This is nothing like that Bulls team. I doubt they win the Cup either, but this is a legit high quality team, the Bulls were not.

The Bulls were always headed toward a low peak with that team. Sure, it was neat that they had some young, decent players, but without a superstar in the NBA, you are doomed.

I don't think this Blackhawks team wins a Cup either, but they should be better than that.

Cup Finals isn't unreasonable this year, though Detroit will probably come out strong again despite losing a few key guys.
