I saw that he got another base hit today. He also reached on an error and got HBP. With our offense struggling the way it has is there a chance that we might see him in Chicago soon?

Why dont the Cubs call this guy up?

Check out the Jake Fox thread in the minor league forum.

Apparently, his defense is so bad that a call up is not worth it. It's getting to the point where he can't possibly make the Cubs any worse, though.

Can anyone play a worse left field than Fonsie? Also interleague play is coming up hopefully they use him for the away games.

Soriano's outfield defense isn't bad.

Yes.

Ive never actually seen Fox play is he really that bad in the field?

I think its pretty obvious that hes "that" bad in the field or else hed be up by now.

The problem with calling up Fox for the AL interleague games is the fact that Lou Piniella is more likely to use Hoffpauir at DH than Fox.

However, considering the Cubs could use a power bat off the bench, Fox's callup would be most welcome.

Ive officially conceeded that if he were to be brought up, it would have been done by now. Also, they have him playing 1B pretty much every game lately, so theyre clearly not grooming him for 3rd. I think he'll have a solid career as a DH. I just hope we get at least somethig for him.

I want to see Blake Lalli moved up to Iowa from Tennessee. He just turned 26. He's a lefty catcher/1B. He is hitting 361/415/931 in 97 AB's. Only 11 K's. Last year at Tennessee, he hit 286/324/810 in 70 AB's with 18 K's. He has 62 doubles and 17 HR's in 839 minor league AB's which hints that he's a line drive hitter. His fielding percentage at catcher is .988 in the minor leagues while at 1B it is .983.

At Tennessee, he is limiting Steve Clevenger's and Welington Castillo's AB's (74 & 78 respectively). Clevenger needs more playing time, so this will allow him to play more 1B. Castillo can play more catcher. Russ Canzler can back up 1B and LF.

At Iowa, Mark Johnson is doing nothing. There is no reason to keep him around since if we needed another catcher, we would put Chris Robinson on the 40-man roster and call him up (370/389/908 and he's excellent defensively). Also, Jake Fox should be playing everywhere (LF, RF, 3B, C, 1B) to increase his trade value (since we obviously have no intention of calling him up). By having Lalli at Iowa, Fox will need to play positions other than 1B more often. If anyone is worried about releasing Mark Johnson, other moves could easily be made (Macias back to Peoria, Matulia back to the DL, Fuld/Robnett/Spears sent to AA).

At Extended Spring Training, there are five catchers waiting for an opening (John Contreras, Matt Cerda, Jose Guevara, Alvara Sosa, and Juan Medina). The Cubs will inevitably draft more catchers in a couple weeks. There are two or three catcher spots available at Boise and Mesa - not everyone will get a spot. By moving Lalli up, all of the others can move up thus creating an opening at Peoria for one of those guys.

Of course, if you prefer to move up a 1B instead, that works too. Sean Hoorelbeke and Chris Weimer deserve to get out of Extended Spring Training too! EDIT: Add Jericho Jones to that list as he went 2 for 3 today while playing 1B according to Arizona Phil.

What d'ya think? I'm procrastinating and avoiding writing report cards. This took a nice chunk of time to write!

Probable Starters

Iowa: RHP Jeff Samardzija (1-0, 3.75 ERA, 24 IP, 21 K/6 BB)

Tennessee: LHP Casey Lambert (3-2, 1.91 ERA, 37.2 IP, 14 K/10 BB)

Peoria would have been Chris Carpenter.

Actually Beliveau would have gone today...he will now back up Carpenter on Tuesday. But JB is in our rotation now...Cabrera back to relieving Archer in a tandem setup due to limited pitch counts on both. Carp Tues, Arch/Cabby on Wed, Hatley Thurs, Bristow Friday and Beliveau Saturday...

Arizona Phil at TCR[/url]"]Playing in front of his family visiting from South Korea, 18-year old bonus baby Hak-Ju Lee ripped a three-run inside-the-park home run to key a four-run 7th, but the Cubs couldn't hold the lead, as the EXST Angels rallied to tie the EXST Cubs 5-5 in Memorial Day Extended Spring Training holiday action at Fitch Park Field #3 this morning. in hot & sunny Mesa, AZ.

Meanwhile, 18-year old Dominican LHP Jeffry Antigua and 19-year old Venezuelan RHP (and Carlos Zambrano clone) Larry Suarez were mowing down the Angels hitters, combining to throw six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and no walks over the six frames, while striking out 11.

...

PITCHERS:

1. Jeffry Antigua - 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K, 2/1 GO/FO

2. Larry Suarez - 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K, 2/2 GO/FO

Arizona Phil also says the Reds picked up Mark Pawelek in a trade with an independent league team.
